hey guys,

ive been thinking lately about using a noies gate for my effects chain, because i hate having to keep turning my OD and fuzz pedals off when there are breaks in songs because they're generating too much noise.

now i know i should probably invest some time into thinking about frequency rolloffs and the such to fix the hiss, which is the main problem, but that's not what i'm trying to solve now.

i was wanting to put the trigger for a noise gate at the front of my effects chain, but have the part of the circuit that actually cuts the noise off at the end of the chain (or immediately before any delay). this would be great because any noise generated by the fuzz even with no signal will often be audible, and then get effected by any phaser or the such. so this is just an endeavour to make the chain quiet when i stop playing.

ive been looking at the mxr noise gate from //www.tonepad.com but couldnt see how i could split the volume trigger from the audio circuit.

thanks for any help guys.

I'm not sure where to tap off to get the trigger input to be external on the MXR, but many noise gate circuits allow for that easily. (any rack noise gate should have an external trigger input)

The Craig Anderton gate does and the Paia Gator kit is great for that.

See "Note Processing for Guitars" at GEO.

Full wave rectify and filter, then use a comparator, or use a comparator driving a monostable.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
