Uglyface problem

I have made an Ugly face before and i have made another one on a pcb. The new one on the PCB makes all the sounds i would expect from the ugly face apart from one. The laser canon / ray gun sound. The first one i made works fully, I just dont under stand it, I have swopped the chips and it still does the the same thing. I have checked every thing i can think of, it makes All the other sounds fine exactly the same just not the ray gun sound.

Has any one else experiecned this? Or have surgestions as to what might cause it?

When I had that problem, it was because the LDR didn't have high enough a dark resistance. Are you using homemade vactrols or the actual VTL5C2/3?

I am using  homemade vactrols , The first one i made worked fine now problem, but maybe that is the key, I guess I'll have to go through all the ones i have, What sort of dark resistance should i be looking for?(in ohms!) I will have a meausre of the working one and see what resistance that one has. I thought they were from the same batch but thinking about it i dnt think they were .....

I think you want a dark resistance of at least 10M.

I used the vactrol it suggests but doesnt sound like the homewrecker example.. Maybe it just needs a home made one.

I used the VTL5C2 and it works fine. These are 2/$1.00 at bigmicro.com

When yours is self oscillating, with sense all up and freq all down, do you get the falling bomb sound?

thank you for your reply's I havent had a chance to have another fiddle yet. But i am pretty sure my LDR's that I'm using dont go down to 10M. And "When yours is self oscillating, with sense all up and freq all down, do you get the falling bomb sound?"  No i dont  

I have been some what side tracked reciently, but thank you for your replies once more and I will post some pic's when it is all done

HELP I am having a similar issue where my sens pot only worked for one day therefore I get no more strong wah envelope or lazer effects. everything elese works fine. my old ugly face that I used to have had the same problem where the sensitivity knob did nothing. thids seems to be a reoccurring problem among people. could it be the timer 555 chip or substituting JRC or LM386?

did you try turning DOWN the knobs? if the sens is too high it won't trigger audibly. turn it down all the way and bring it up slowly til ya hear it. if you don't, check your wiring and soldering. particularly if you use solid core wire, which always seems to fault internally AFTER ya get the damned things running

Damn. I saw the title of your thread and was going to open up about my ugly face problem. Then I realised we were talking stomp boxes.

Socket LEDs and LDRs, as already mentioned, as sometimes results vary. Also make note of any parts substitutions as that got me last time. Go over the caps in case you got a wrong value by accident.

I just built another uglyface and im still having the same problem with this one. No envelope.sensativity knob doesn't work at all on this build.just like my other UF. I guess ill try a different brand of vtl 5c3. im not sure what elese to do. i used another lm386-n could this be the issue and why did my sens knob on my first build work for 1 day?

I did not socket my optocoupler and i used a lm386 instead of the jrc so maybe it is a substitution problem.
