Why so few Reverb effects/projects?

....years ago in a studio I recorder some songs, and the studio had what was called a "plate reverb"-I would love to build one of those; it sounded like the "concert hall" type someone else was referring to.....we also were able to get what the tech told us was "infinite reverb" which sounded pretty close to the "crystalline" echo sound.....
