hey guys, where do you buy your boxes from or is there a good alternative to the hammond 1590 box.  Just built my first pedal (circuitry anyway) and looking for enclosures

Contact your local electronics distributor or go to Small Bear Electronics. As I recall, they have alots of Hammonds and substitutes as well.

I get my Hammond boxes from Mouser Electronics (//www.mouser.com).  The Hammonds are a little more expensive than the Taiwanese boxes, but they're definitely worth the extra money.  The fit and finish on the Hammonds is better and the aluminum used seems to me to be of a better quality.

I use hammonds too. Mostly because I like 'em and part patriotism. They're made 45 minutes away from me in Guelph Ontario.

My local electronics shop sells a copy of the Hammond 1590B box that is made by LM Heeger I think it is. Not quite as heavy duty as a genuine Hammond box, but still plenty sturdy for a stompbox...  8)

does anybody have a part number from mouser?  I didn't realize there would so many enclosures there.  I guess I would go with the normal hammond 1590 that seems to be the most liked.  just need a mouser part number of enclosure size.

thanks

I've been using electrical junction boxes from Home Depot.  I like the industrial look.   8)

The small 1590B (MXR-size) or the larger 1590BB?

thumposaurus - Home pedot has aluminum junction boxes? i havent seen these - they'd be much easier to work than steel!

Do you have any pictures online of a finished box?  I have been considering using electrical junction boxes as well.

If you go the junction box route, be aware of the punchout parts being susceptible to metal fatigue if they aren't secured with some strong epoxy.  I just tack weld mine with my MIG welder.  I've also tried the steel stud route as demonstrated on R.G.'s site.  It works, but takes too much time to make it look good.  I, however, am happy just to get these things inside something quick so I can use them.  After all the time and effort of finishing junction boxes and other home-made types, the Eddystone version of the 1590BB from Small Bear is a good deal.  I guess the juction boxes can be less labor intensive to do if you don't want to smooth them out with Bondo, like I do.

FX made from junction boxes can be seen at the 4ms pedal site, and, iirc, moosapotamus's site too.

unless you put it a lot of work with bondo/epoxy, it's going to look like exactly what you think it will - an ugly box with knobs and switches coming out of it. when it comes to these, the more knobs and switches the better. you kind of want a weird sci-fi vibe :) my tremulus lune has 6 knobs and three switches. the box could probably fit more than that pretty comfortably.

its just hard as hell to drill.

...I use the BUD enclosures...the ones MXR used in their early years....i find them to be extremely sturdy, inexpensive (well under the prices of a Hammond), and available in a variety of sizes....

BUD CU124 = Hammond 1590B
BUD CU473 = Hammond 1590BB

Yeah there are two different sized square ones and a round one.

Here's some pics of some finished ones

LPB clone in smaller rectangle sized box.

Bassballs clone in round box

Horrible picture of a Big Muff clone in the larger sized square.

The only probelm with them is that they come painted already but if you leave them to soak for an hour or so in paint stripper they come out clean, and ready to finish.

I just drill all of the holes in the cover, I have a few pictures in a post today with pictures of my prototype overdrive. I've been able to put a lot of knobs on these...

For those of you in the UK (and Europe)  jprelec.co.uk have a selection of diecast aluminium enclosures by Eddystone (actually owned by Hammond). They are pretty cheap, and I use the 27134PSLA for lots of smaller projects. The selection isn't too bad although some of the larger ones are a little of the bulky side, but I'd recommend you check them out!

I'd be interested to know if anyone else uses these and what they think of them as an alternative?
