THIS IS THE INSANE DISTORTION , CHECK THE SCHEMATICS IS BASED ON ARON NELSON SMASH DRIVE , AND USE LM386 , IS VERY EASY TO BUILD

HAPPY BUILD :)

You really need that DC coupling capacitor at the source of the JFET as shown in the schematic you sent to me.  Otherwise one of those diodes is biasing the JFET into a non-functional amplifier.

The schematic you emailed to me was perfect functionally, I haven't prototyped it yet so I don't know how it sounded.

oops sorry , i mistake the schematics Names .... check now :D

project board assembly come in some hours and sound test

Transmogrifox

There you go.  Much better.

Believe it or not, that 15k resistor that you had in the drain at one point would generate some clipping.  It wouldn't increase the gain by any means, but if it was biased correctly, it would limit the current through the JFET at a certain input signal amplitude so there would be a distorted signal on both source and drain outputs.

There is nothing wrong with what you have now.  It looks like a worthy build, no doubt.  I like the simplicity of the 2 knob tone stack.  I often don't find myself using the mids much on the 3-band stack, so the 2-band stack is quite easy for quickly getting sounds.  I was also pleased with the flavor of distortion that comes from the LM386.  It just seems very tight and full.

I'm looking forward to hearing some audio clips

looks cool joshua! im not sure the tonestack will work particulary well, because the bass control will alos affect the mids, as they all pass through the 47nf cap...but untill you try out, i'll shut up

Im not finish yet whit my peoject board, i think today i put the sound demo and photo from project board :)

cheers!

Insane demo is here please copy and paste , sorry for delay time , but to much )&*^@)#*%_@ triuble in Project board, some times 1 cable or jumper do a mess ......... i fry my last 2 Lm386 and i need to get more tomorrow...... i hate some bad quality cables.

Btw i made some changes on the schematic this is the final schematic .... of course all sugestions and mods idea are wellcome ..... :D

Transmogrifox

It sounds absolutely sweetzious!  Nice playing by the way.

Is that how it sounds without the DC coupling cap isolating the diodes on the input of the LM386?  If you do it without the coupling cap, you only need the positively biased diode.  The other isn't doing anything.

I may have to move it up in my list of builds.

wow! sounds fantastic! very nice playing!  :P  :D  8)   i love it! btw, Transmogrifox is right about the diodes...

Thanks guys, well  i put the schematic final mod , but check  i put ver. 1.0E , so mods are welcome :D

Btw i play guitar since i was 12 years old, i have many student's :) , kids 10 to 15  those effects are for my students you know , not xpensive , and i gift some effects to my best 3 students of the month , you know to motivate play, learn and keep away from bad things , like gangs and drugs ...

Transmogrifox

That's a cool thing to do for students--especially when they're custom built.  Where are your students ever going to get this stuff elsewhere?

I hope you have a good student in mind to try out your new insane distortion.

Transmogrifox check the Schematic link i change to final version from me, but please check and tell me if i ommited some thing, god im tired hehe, to much work today ( students )and record whit the band ...

well we have many mucis store here about 20 , and many times are cheap brands , like : Arion, Alesis, Danalectro, Rocksson, GDS ( local , and only made a overdrive/distortion unit ) ( is a mess hehe btw)

only 1 store sales : BOSS,DIGITECH, ZOOM, LINE6, DOD, MXR, ETC...

BTW Local Musicians don't like Fuzz, Ibanez Tube S., and supra distortion

PurpleTheory

Sounds awesome! Nice work. I really want to try and build it, so I threw together a layout, will this work?

thanks,

This looks like a good second project. Just put together Aron's booster, which works well, and now I'm lost to the world of DIY electronics, even though I really don't know what I'm doing yet.

Anyway, it's hard to find the  2n5457 transistor in Norway, and I'm a bit impatient, so I was wondering if it could be substituted by other,  more easily obtainable transistors. I've read the faq and looked at possible substitutions there, but couldn't find that many of them here either. But there is one I can get, 2N3819, which I saw was mentioned in the same context as 2n5457. Could this possibly work in this effect? How would it influence the sound.

If I solder on a socket for the trannies, do I risk burning something in the circuit if I swap different ones without really knowing their characteristics (I'm not quite on that level yet)?

Thanks for all the useful info you're all sharing.

Best,

Lars Erik

I suppose it's possible...I socket tranny's and miswire the pins before ...enough to say I didn't notice any damages as a result.
So I'd say socket that tranny and stick in what you have until you can get the 'other one to compare.
I don't know that tranny, so data sheets or hopefully someone will chime in...[if it's an NPN Jfet it's wortha a try at least...just be sure of the pinout or it may not work].
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

PurpleTheory:

Nice PCB build, in the fact this schematic and test are not finish yet , is version 1.0e like i post in the schematic :) but this PCB is very good work

any mod or sugestion are welcome :)
