Why, that would be Siliconix, I think. They are a specialist fet company (been going for a long time by semi standards). Well worth looking out for any of their data & application books.

Yes I think that's the way they buy components - from manufacturers who are either over stocked or just don't need them anymore due to not making that product anymore. But I generally don't have any problems with the components - the odd semi doesn't work occassionally

I don't know where people get these stories from. Jaycar (via Electus, the 'distribution/bulk purchasing' parent compant) buy their stuff new from manufacturers, same as any 'real' electronics place in the USA or Europe. In fact, my local Altronics branch sources some of their components from Electus. I have never, ever, had any failures with any components I have purchased from Jaycar (but I steer clear of the x-wing switches).

PS just get the J201s from Aron, the switches I buy from him arrive consistently in 5-6 days.

So far as their down-market kitch like "farting salt&pepper shakers" are concerned, if selling that rubbish helps keep them in business so I can buy a CD4007 on Sunday afternoon, then God Bless Jaycar :)

oh yeah and the butthole pencil holder in the February flyer! I LOVE mine!!!     :!:

Dick Smith and Jaycar.....
For me, these two are so damned convenient that I seem to end up there despite any misgivings . Rockby are great , but quite a hike from my place-live in Sth Melb.
This came up for me 'cause I was speaking to an amp builder in Dick Smiths yesterday that totally bagged the component quality from Jaycar.
He seemed to think that they were mostly cheapest possible Chinese sourced parts and "questionable" quality wise. The stuff found inside the $49.95 supermarket DVD players.
Got me wondering if those components, especially the passives where such a great idea or not. Often I wanna build or finish something straight away.
Which supplier do you feel good about quality wise for day to day builds?
Also, theres a couple of pedals that I want to totally "nail" BSIAB for example. For this I'm gonna go with the best bits I can get my hands on , within reason.
Any convieient ie can-drive-to sources of better caps?

Toney

Finally cracked it and placed an order with futurelec Australia.
What was I missing, these guys looks great.
Pretty good prices too:

small vero = au$1.26
large= au $2.59
This stuff looks top notch with pre drilled holes for standoffs

TL 071 = 35c
NE5532 = 73c

Dick Smith can get........

I never thought I'd be spending so much of my life defending Jaycar :)
Mikeb is right, nothing wrong with Jaycar componets.
And what an amp builder (or anyone!) would be doing in a DickSmith store I can't imagine  last thing I bought there (Lonsdale St store) was a fax machine with a faulty handset that took MANY visits to get fixed.
Let's know when that Futurlec order comes in!! maybe we should run a sweep!

Toney

Prhaps buying a toaster?....who knows

Well, this will be my first order with them.

Others have experieced long delays with delivery time from Futurelec??

I wouldn't be surprised if DSE buys a lot of their stuff from the same suppliers as Jaycar. Oh, and they actually sell those 'cheapy' DVD player themselves. I guess they would know! :)

It doesn't matter who you buy the parts from; as long as they are operational, they will be fine. I decide who to buy from based on a) lowest price and b) quickest postage or serving time - time is money!

There aren't all that many component manufacturers, really. The majority of chips have only one or two makers (you need two to be a US military supplier, so arrangements are made to parallel manufacture under license while chips are still under patent or design registeration). Old chips like a 741 might have 10 sources or so.

Anyone can buy a resistor making machine (about the size of a large photocopier!) but when it comes to caps & pots, there aren't a lot of players. Places like Jaycar and Altronics are buying from the same manufacturers as Digikey & Mouser.

It's a scary thought, but (at least as far as thru-hole goes) I think we'll soon be saying that THESE were the 'good old days'.

eeep! Count me out when there are only surface mount components! Stupid fingers!
I use the jaycar stomps in MY pedals, usually cause I want it done RIGHT NOW and they are so damn convenient. When I make a pedal for someone else I try to use quality.[/i]

By the way, on my parts hunt, I found that RS still has the Ca3080e for au$1.88 showing as "in stock" if that helps anyone.....(ross compessor etc)

I used to work there when I was in high school for extra cash. Back then they actually employed people that had an idea about electronics - now it's if you can sell a computer....

They have cd 4049 ubcn by fairchild semi (62c)

Not sure about those letter codes, but its a DIP16
If any doubts: Small Bear has em for sure.

sean k

Yeah I'll try small bear, the cd4049ub series are buffered so they don't work so well but the earlier cd4049ae were unbuffered but before I order from small bear I'll try the 4069 which is also a hex inverter and seems to be unbuffered.
