Alas...to be honest...although I swapped every cap with a higher & lower values & tried a lower gain Q1....I could NOT get my JB to sound *proper*.  Finally had to give it a rest...lest I go truly mad!  Had octaves commin & goin and an amplitude warble on high notes...sounding like 2 unison strings slightly off tune.  (subliminal oscillation??) I tried swappin the E & C of Q2...lost some buzz & sustain.  Perhaps it's a *bias thing*...but I'm a musical genius...not an electronic one!
I'd be interested in hearing mp3s of how some of *you guys* units sound.
Helpfull hint: no need to play anything flashy...just let some notes ring out a bit.  But for now...mine sucks.  Best fuzz I've built so far...was the *differential*...that I accidentally shorted out & made better.  It's in an old post...I also used the word *monster*...hehe!

The Differential Distortion? That's interesting, because I've never heard anyone say they liked that one, and that it was more of a crappy OD. I'm not guitar genius, that's for sure. My inspiration for playing and singing is Neil Young. I figure if he can play and sing in public, I should never be embarassed! Excuse me, but they have some Pat Travers on the radio.....

I made some experiments with the BossTone and endded up with this:

http://aronnelson.com/gallery/Schematics/Tone_Boss?full=1

I made the "attak" pot a 500k log pot and added a nVn style tone control (thanx joe). this introduces not only bass but also defines the qauntity of intermodulation and octave being add to the tone. This. to my ears (and taste) is a more versitile, interesting unit.

The diodes are now a pair of Geramniums BtB, and I drew a switching arrangement, but I haven't thoroughly tested it.

Try it out, tell me what you think. With my Classic30 and Strat it delivers raw, powerful, in-your-face fuzz... I love it.

have fun

Slightly OT...but in case anyone is curious:  http://diystompboxes.com/sboxforum/viewtopic.php?t=28178&highlight=

Warning...my work was sloppy...no gaurentees...but it's easy.

I have the day off & may try the above schem...but my hopes are low.  Just have a feeling Q2 is what's giving me trouble....since I messed w/everything else.  Perhaps adding the power supply filter might fix it?

And if anyone cares...I MAY be able to find my OLD recording of a vintage JB & post an mp3.

I don't know who to thank for the mod information, but I think it was Pete Moore. I settled on changing the treble roll off cap, and the output cap to .001uf, and it thinned out REAL nice. I'm getting a really good   "Satisfaction" tone with it now. This will be a switched cap choice, because I really like the the .1uf in there for most things. Anything less than .001 is too little, because it starts reverting to booster status and loosing it's fuzz. I also tried heaver caps in there to take the place of the .1s (.2s) but it made it too muddy for my taste, and took the grit and growl away. At the same time, I was piddling around with the Digital Octaver Fuzz, as I talked about a little while ago in that post. It's not the same type animal as the Boss Tone, but I'm here to tell you that this circuit is a sleeper. It is way huge, and will not only peel the paint off the wall, but take the window seal and baseboards with it. People should be taking a look at this one!
