I'm gonna try this out. I picked up a couple of boxes & covers this weekend at Lowes. I paid slightly more than $1.60, lol, but they were still under the $2 mark.

I really like the approach here too, having everything mounted on the cover, including the jacks.

Just be careful with the drilling process. Before I got a drill press, the use a unibit on steel with a hand held drill in a vice was something I had to use a lot of care when doing.

The Aluminum enclosures are a bit easier to drill - so to anyone trying this - it's not unsafe, but a little more force is needed with steel so it's a good idea to double check how safely you are doing this. Screwing the lid down into something solid while drilling was very helpful

Yeah, thanks for the warning Mike. I've got a drill press, and I'll be sure to clamp them down when drilling.

Are you still using this design? Anything you would have done differently?

This is an ingenious idea. Thank you so much. I have a crate of electrical boxes and parts doing nothing. Why didn't I think of this! Brilliant!  :o

Beautiful paint jobs I really like the lettering.
Here are some pics of what I have done using the same boxes (Rayco) from HomeDepot and Lowes.
A couple of FFs

AND a couple of TS type pedals
With some photos of the proccess

Here are photos of the entire proccess of uphostering a $1.60 enclosure from Home Depot or Lowes.
Sorry they arent in order.

Not being a smart aleck - I swear......

But do you really need to shield a metal box ?

That's OK,
If you have used a nice Hammond box you will notice how they "seal" to prevent ANY stray interference from entering the enclosure.
If you have worked with the Rayco boxes then you know they aren't even close to being sealed.
That's why I run the foil up and curl it into a lip that seals the enclosure all the way around ,even the small holes inside are all covered.
And I cover the two unused mounting holes on the cover plate too.
Is that overkill? Maybe until you have had to set up your gear under a bunch of the noisiest-flickering neon/florescent beer signs
on the West Coast,
Or if you play in close proximity to a bunch of CRTs in a small home studio.
So probably not,but after all the effort I put into upholstering one why skimp on proper shielding?
Its like 20 minutes or less of extra work and costs pennies.
