Hi

I'm a newbie, interested in building the ROG Ruby Bassman ie http://www.runoffgroove.com/ruby.html.

It seems sensible to start with a signal generator and I came across this at http://www.redcircuits.com/Page13.htm.

I have attempted a Veroboard layout using MS Excel as follows:

Can anyone comment on (a) the sense in building the signal generator and/or (b) the Veroboard layout? I have tried to test it for "circuit validity" and there seems to be a lot of unused Veroboard real-estate.

Thanks and best regards

Chris

Great forum btw  :D

I have the schamatic and vero layout for a combined signal injector & tracer. I use mine all the time (not just for fx). If you want it I'll put it on the photobucket site...

MrChameleon

Hi Torchy

Yes please, if it's no trouble.

May I ask how one checks Vero layouts for correctnes wrt its circuit diagram (such as the above)? I used a red pen to trace out the connections and compared them to the circuit diagram, but I imagine this gets rather complex rather quickly.

Best

Torchy

I use "node checking" - ie where the components join together is a "node". Once Im happy that each "node" has the correct members I check that the "nodes " join up correctly.

I don't know why, but this idea reminds me that we need to verobaord RDV's siren

Errr, I can't find my photoshop CD.  I recently reformatted my computer...

I ended up buying a kit of a sine/triangle/square/integral wave generator. For $5, you'd pay that for the parts. It had a 200mV output (great for simulating a guitar signal) which you can vary and runs off a 9V battery
Only thing I have to do is chuck it in a box with some cro terminals and an on/off switch.

If anyone is interested Maplin do a signal generator kit which puts out a constant 1kh sine wave with variable volume for a fiver. Ideal for debugging and tracing effects!

The link is http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=22553&TabID=1&source=15&WorldID=10&doy=17m3

I'm sure it's available in the US as well for all you on t'other side o' pond.

Actually, it's Velleman MK105.  A quick froogle search gives

$7, not bad.

where did you get that!? i want to make one into an LFO!  :D

MrChameleon

Thanks rubberlips, James P, SirPoonga. I'll have a look around and report back.

I got it from Jaycar here in Oz, but I think it's a vellerman kit. Couldn't go wrong for the price

Hi rubberlips

Was it the "Short Circuits Waveform Generator" you bought from Jaycar? "This ... produces adjustable square and triangular waves between 100Hz-20KHz .." etc? It's KJ-8110 in the Jaycar catalogue,

Thanks

Chris

That particular Jaycar kit KJ-8110 only gives square and triangular, no sine waves.

Dick Smith appears to have a useful kit K2802 but it's $30 Aust!!!
I think if you only wnat a fixed freq sine oscillator, a phase shift one on vero would be a lot cheaper!!!
And, looking for one.. here is a good one: 1KHz sine, 0.16% distortion

all we need is for one of the vero fans to lay it out

RG's quick and dirty oscillator is on my to do list.  8)

No Chris,
It was a vellerman kit PMK105'1
Maybe I got it from Dickies :? ???
Yep, that was it looking at the catalogue. From memory, I thought it was cheaper at the time but it probably was about $17. At the time, yes I could have made one on vero board but I wanted it going that afternoon, and a half hour later...:)

that's the guy
You know it's still probably cheaper to import it from the US than paying Dickies prices!

I sent qkits an email asking if they'd send one to Oz. Let's see what happens  :D

It's amazing the cost of things even with in OZ. Parts cost most in the country cost more than in canberra, canberra is more expensive than sydney. Most things come from melbourne....everyones making many 'cept me :)

Check out K4102, guitar to audio amp on this page:
http://store.qkits.com/category.cfm/SOUND?&StartRow=1

might be the job for whoever was asking for a guitar preamp for their soundcard. Note there are probably a million places selling these kits in USA & elsewhere, I just posted the qkits because they were the first 'cheap' one I found. Another place might have some DIY parts as well & make it worth while to spread the shipping cost over a wider lot of gear.
