Walters:

R.G. is a class act, and answers a lot of questions for a lot of people....

Your questions are kind of vague.  things like "phase shift in capacitors" are too hard to give a simple anser unless we have a specific circuit to look at...  If someone were to give you a complete answer that would really explain the theory, and the implications of it in different circuits we could write 20 pages, and probably leave you more confused than you were in the first place.

anyways... welcome to the forum.

Dragonfly

walters...
as i mentioned earlier in the thread, welcome to the forum. i think you might have a wrong view of things here, as you havent had a chance to "lurk" and "search" to find that the people here are not only good people, but they are very giving of their time.
a few things to help you out....

a) many of the questions you've asked have been covered before, so the best way to start looking for the answers you need is to use the "search" function at the top of the page. i'm pretty sure that you would get tired of answering the same exact questions over and over again, and its even more trying when the person asking seems to be "demanding" that the information is spoon fed to them. this happens occasionally, and usually the person discovers "how" to search, and then spends the next few weeks sleeplessly scanning the pages here :)

b) respect the people here, and they will respect you. people like RG, Mark Hammer, Doug Hammond, Aron, etc, are all VERY kind and giving of their free time...they try to help us help ourselves[/i] ...in other words, give a man a fish, he'll eat for a night...teach him how to fish, and he'll eat for a lifetime. they try to give people the tools to learn for ourselves.

c) if you ask questions one or two at a time, not only will they be answered more thoroughly, but you'll also be able to grasp the theories and answers better. how do football teams get better ???  ...one play at a time.

d) my grammer sucks...but i try to at least break things up into distinct sentences so that it's easier for people to read. you don't have to be perfect...just have enough respect to make people not have to "figure out" what youre trying to say.

e) nowhere...and i do mean nowhere...will you find a more informative resource regarding musical effects than this forum. respect the hard work of the people who make this place great.  people have spent years, even decades, learning the things that are posted here....and sometimes they want you to find the answer out for yourself...theyre more than happy to "guide" you to the right path for finding the answer...they just don't want to have to think "for" you.

f) this is a big one for me....if you feel youve gained something from the forum, try to give back....help other people, share ideas, etc.

g) even though you may not think you were taking advantage of the people here, i, and many others, feel that you were.  i understand that you dont feel like you were, but look at it this way....if you had season tickets to the Yankees games every year, and JOe, the new guy at work that you hardly know asks you for a ticket 20 times a day, you are gonna get annoyed....so lets say you decide to be nice and take him to a game, and then next week he starts badgering you again...so, you take him again...pretty soon he's expecting to use your tickets to go to every game, and you are left feeling like you are being taken advantage of. maybe he's just a really enthusiastic fan, and doesn't realize that he's taking advantage of you...but he is.

h) dont ask people to do something you wouldnt do for yourself. in other words, dont just decide that you need information and EXPECT people to dish it out for you...you wouldnt like that being done to you, so understand that other people dont like it.

i) your hunger for knowledge is a great thing...use it to drive you to teach yourself about electronics...you'll learn better  that way.

j) when people send you information in PM's, theyre trying to HELP you...not degrade you. Damn, i wish RG, Mark, and many others here would send me those PM's...but i probably found all that info by searching here on the forum, as well as "out there" in internet land :)

k) have a great day....and tell others to have a great day !

l)rock on !

Mark, could you (or anyone else) please post a link to this newsletter?
I'd like to have a look at it too.
Thanks.

gorohon

I can attest to searching for answers rather than just throwing out questions.  I don't post a whole lot, but damned if I don't read a great deal of the stuff that is on this forum everyday.   Then again, I have my share of requests on this forum that were redundant given that the information was already in here to begin with--I just had to do a little looking.
Oh yeah, I think that we owe R.G. and others a debt of gratitude for not only their extensive sharing of their expertise, but also how they defend and maintain the integrity of this forum.

Device is on Mark Hammer's page:

It's quite useful for general knowledge.

Holy crap!!!
Walters, if thats who you are (insert maxwell smart voice) welcome, but PLEASE chill, lurk and learn. This is a great place and totally learner tolerant but it has a pace and style and protocols. Just hang out a bit , you'll get the feel.
I should know, I've gone from der-zero electronic knowledege to well, some....
You have me a little suss though brother, you seem to be displaying a weird mix of petulance and naivite yet claiming quite a bit of experience....
So the impression you give, well kinda doesn't add up.
You might even inadvertently get people thinking that you are setting out to completely distract the forum because this is how it could be done...
I'm sure you wouldn't want that....

So I say if you're SINCERE, read back through the answers you have been given ....take some time, think.... use the search function.
R.G. and others are appreciated around here for their kindness and experience. In some cases a life time of dedicated electronics experience.
I certainly understand that instant access to this kind of expert inside information would not have been possible until recently and its VALUABLE.
Worthy of respect...
So, welcome but please, lurk, learn, get the feel...

Bye the way, Harmony-central forums too, maybe you know that...

Thank you.   I haven't visited Ampage as much as I probably should have yet - only searched the (ampage) forum a few times.

-----------
Back at the health club Elaine meets Jimmy who is wearing crutches.

Jimmy: "So what do you want to see Jimmy about?"
Elaine: "Well.... (pointing at him) Jimmy!"
Jimmy: "Huh uh..."
Elaine: "About tonight hum.. there's been a little misunderstanding."
Jimmy: "Ah! ... Jimmy doesn't like misunderstanding."
Elaine: "Yeah. What happened was...."
Jimmy: "Jimmy and misunderstanding kinda clash."
Elaine: (suddenly intrigued) "You know, I've never heard anyone talk the way
you do. It's very unusual."
Jimmy: "Well, Jimmy's very unusual."
Elaine: "Well anyway hum.... see when I made the date, I thought that
Jimmy......"
Jimmy: "Hey look. Hank's got a new boyfriend. Jimmy's not threatened by
Hanks sexuality ... Jimmy's happy for Hank."
Elaine: "Elaine once tried to convert one but Elaine's not going through
that again."

Walter,
The best teachers don't give you answers but encourage even more questions but on a path that will have you finding your own answers. Most of the pedals out there are built of reasonably uncomplicated building blocks but where they hit genius is when an intuitive sense of possibilty is given free reign to experiment and discover what kind of things might happen if...,too many straight answers discourage this abandon to discovery.I myself have just cottoned onto a discovery in the realm of acoustics and room treatments and it actually came about because an authority said what I'd done didn't work, the books said so,and we did it another way,an accepted way,and what I'd actually done before became obvious. He was right but what I'd done was re-invent the accepted practice with a twist and it does work.Anyways, stop being angry and start listening, read between the lines and see that an easy answer isn't neccessarily the best thing for you.
Monkey see, monkey do.

Hi this is walters

im not sure if i want to come back to talking with you techs
alot of u are two faces in here this is a internet site
thats ment for questions i thought about guitar effects
alot of drama has been made about me already i have like
600views about this post about me its pretty embrassing how u treat
a new person in your site. I can't trust really any one of you
some of you are really nice tho. I dont care if u have a Degree
or a EE degree or u been doing electronics since u were 14yrs old
so what its a piece of paper on your wall even if that. Does this
make you smarter than me ?
You should feel lucky and its a gift to be able to go to a Upper Division
electronic classes. R.G. has made me feel very Guity about that
im taking advantage and im dominating the site, then delete
all my questions and post to free up some space. I came to this
site to have fun and a good time it has Stressed me out alot
with all this. The coping and Pasting of what i said to R.G is what i said
and to all u techs that hate me for taking advantage of you
you all put me in a spot to say something to try to stop this
i take electronics serious. i would like if R.G would never answer
my questions that i have posted i dont like his vibe at all.
Is there anyway to Block him so i dont have to talk to him or
get any messages from him tell me?
i wish u all the best in electronics and always be nice
and share the knowlegde and enlightment u have

Well, *I* think you're a troll ... but time will tell. We like to have people contribute here as well as ask questions. Contribute something and likely you'll find people are a little more receptive. It seems to me you want people to do all the work for you - generally, it's accepted you need to take the answers away, actually build some circuits, and then come back if you still need help.

Do you mind if I ask - what country are you from?

Mike

walters

is this backmail or strings attached to your answers only or u mean
for everybody?

Look like i said i dont have people working for me or im taking
advantage of them. You dont have to answer my questions
if your thinking to much and its so hard on you to and i have
to return u a favor back

Tim Escobedo

This is not Walters.

Walters, your posts are whiny, semi-coherent, juvenile. Stop whining. Listen instead. Read. Heed advice. It will get you far.

What are my credentials? None. I graduated from a surprisingly crappy Catholic high school. I did a half assed year of liberal arts college and called it quits. Got a job and went on with my life. I was curious about electronics, looked up some books. Learned a few things.

Today, it's much easier, with so much info available via mouse click. You've got it easy. Take advantage of the knowledge at your disposal.

And learn how to interact with people.

walters

I thought u were homeless Tim

Toney

Hey Walt,
Can I call you Walt?
You've caused quite a stir here, as I guess you've figured...
You fascinate me, brother.....tell me do you love guitar? Another instrument?
Been playing for long?
What kinda set up you got? Who are your influences?
See, I'm more of a player than any kind of electronic "tech", I'm a hobbyist, but nearly everything I've learned was inspired by or read here, so I really appreciate this place,  its given me access to sounds I wouldn't have otherwise come by...
It's a DIY STOMPBOX forum, so I'd say everyone here plays, but you have me stumped, I got no "range" on you in terms of how you wanna apply your electronics to music ...
So this is just my curiosity, but it may help you to connect some to the people here...
What do you play?????

davebungo

I think it's Pete Cornish and Dave Gilmour having a good old laugh at our expense.  Their lack of response will prove me correct.

That one quote proves you are not who you are pretending to be.
The question remains who you "really" are.
However, I like your style.

Just some random thoughts:

1) There's no "e" in grammar.

2) You don't need a Master's Degree in Grammar in order to post on a message board.  I don't think you can actually get one.  Then again, where I came from, I learned pretty much everything about grammar, punctuation, syntax, etc. in GRADE SCHOOL.

3) Everyone should review their homophones and contraction useage.  For example, your is 2nd person possessive whereas you're is the contraction of the clause you are.

4) I thought that in order for blackmail to work the blackmailer has to actually have something to blackmail the blackmailee with.

5) Harassment is active, not passive.

6) A phasor and a phaser are slightly different things, in my experience.  One involves imaginary numbers and trig while the other involves MXR and Eddie Van Halen.

7) Ah, blame transference.  There's nothing like someone crying "discrimination" when trying to deflect criticism they either don't like nor want to hear.

8) Everyone should seriously question any university professor that claims you don't need to know the math yet doesn't teach you any meaningful methodology to allow you to function on a day to day basis.  Actually, I question any university professor of a technical subject that tells their students that they don't need to know the math.
Passive sucks.
