Ugly Face envelope control question

I built Tim's "UglyFace" circuit last night following the perf layout on http://www.home-wrecker.com and used the recommended VTL5C3 vactrol. The big thick fuzz part works great, but the sensitivity pot that controls the vactrol seems to be working more as a tone contol with low octaves coming out with it all the way down but none of the animated "auto wah" stuff I've heard on the home-wrecker or RDV's sound clips..... do I need to add another circuit to replace the 1k "sensitivity" pot to make it react this way?

Check the polarity of the vactrol, cause with the control up you should be fuzzquacking bigtime. That's why I like the homemade vactrol I made for mine, I could see the LED lighting up for myself.

Thanks for the reply, RDV. I double checked the polarity of the vactrol and it looks like I have it right. The positive lead of the LED is in upper left corner with the printed side facing down.  I actually have it sitting up vertically to fit on the perfboard, but leads are going to the same place.  Everything is working but the vactrol part of the circuit so I guess either I need to resolder all parts connecting to it and if that doesn't work try "rolling" my own.
     Real disappointed I didn't get this going 100% since it should be a no-brainer with the perf layout.... was really wanting some of that sonic mayhem to blast out today!!!!
