"Auction Ended Early With But It Now" for $800!  What guitar pedal is worth that much?!

smashinator

But it was for TWO pedals.  That makes it EASILY worth it.  Esp. if you want to sound !!!!!!!!!JUST LIKE BRIAN MAY!!!!!!!

What was the little one called again?  "Talent Boost"?

OK, I'll revise my statement:

What two pedals are worth $800?! Maybe a pair of Nanoheads, but I don't know about a pedal made by a guy I never heard of before...

nelson

SOLD AS IS!! for 800 dollars. That is ludicrious.

You do realise who Greg Fryer is ?

The person who built brian mays pedals?

Yep, and also the guy who restored the Red Special.

mlabbee

No - he was that guy with the Eagles  :D

Torchy

Greg Fryer gear is the only gear personally endorsed by B. May esq. He rebuilt Brian's Red Special, and custom made 3 exact replicas for him. He took over where Pete Cornish left off ... Brian has reportedly used the pedals both live and in the studio. A Brian May fanatic would buy themat any price I guess ...

Still overpriced at $800 I think but they do at least have a pedigree  :?

Yeah, and so do dogs have pedigrees................ mumbles

..... now THAT'S just a silly thing to say !!  :)

YOU may not like it personally, but he has a GREAT sound all his own !
Which allows you to spot HIM within three notes.....

However, that doesn't mean that I'd pay 400 bucks for a 20 buck treble
booster....

that may be your opinion but triple platinum record sales tend to suggest otherwise - what would Bohemian Rhapsody be without Brian May's guitar?

IMO, he's got a great sound, but I don't think trying to emulate it will get you very far unless you want to play in a Queen tribute band.  In other words it would be hard to develop an individual style using a sound that is so identifiable with 1 guitarist and 1 band .... you'd be in a band trying to play original tunes and people would be coming up and asking for Queen covers all night ...

I really can't think of any "school" of guitar playing that BM has inspired, in the way that Van Halen has.

You're absolutely entitled to your opinion Nelson, but I've seen Brian May live with and without Queen more times than I care to remember since the first time in 1977. He has one of, if not THE most distinctive and instantly recognisable guitar sounds on the planet. Better yet, he gets that tone consistently, across different gigs and across the years. Im not a May nutcase but I know talent and greatness when I see and hear it

Now the Fryer pedals (particularly he Mayhem) claim to give you "that" sound with an AC30 (Red) or with any amp (Blue). Complete balls IMO. A friend who owns a music shop was exited about getting in a BM signature guitar AND an old AC30 and was selling it as a BM setup. He found someone with a Mayhem to check how it sounded (as I posted in another thread).

I played a Guild BM Signature guitar thru a Fryer Mayhem Red into a 1960-odd tube AC30TB - and still sounded like me (ie crap). I dont even think a wall of AC30's would help. Yes, its a nice pedal, well made, nice tonal range etc, but the claims are excessive and DEFINITELY not worth 400 bucks. Then again I didnt have a sixpenny bit on me ... ...

"IMO, he's got a great sound, but I don't think trying to emulate it will get you very far unless you want to play in a Queen tribute band."

That's exactly the thing I was gonna say when reading this thread. I think it's pretty senseless to spend 800 bucks on two pedals that are the same type a famous guitarist uses. Won't get you too far. Instead, I'd take the 800 bucks, get myself a decent tube amp and work on from there.

Plus, the sound of famous guitarists is about one third of tone and two thirds of playing style. Or something in that scale.

On the other hand, it'd feel real good to have such great tone. And, if you're not too good at tuning your gear and turning knobs, of course you're gonna buy gear that you know has a good tone. :P

Britney Spears sells a lot of records too. I wonder what pedals her guitar player uses?

I still don't think that pair of pedals is worth $800.

Just because Brian May used it to great effect doesn't mean it's going to make you sound like that. I think it has a lot more to do with his ears and fingers than any pedal. Same could be said for Frank Zappa, Scott Henderson and a host of other players.

smashinator

I just hope that someday I'll be able to sell the pedals I build for $400 each on a regular basis.  I'd be pretty happy selling 1 a day, for that price.  :)
