I did search the forums. I did search google. I did not find anything. Didn't notice it on Mr. Hammond's home page either.

I was (re)listening to home-wrecker.com and realised what good smooth, clean, sustaining solo tone this pedal has. Are there any other project with this kind of sound character?

I wouldn't mind one too, Doug, if you're reading this.  I think I made one, but I don't know.      I have an etched and populated, but tragically unmarked board sitting in my to-do pile.  It seems to be one, but a schem would help identify it, not to mention connectin the board to the appropriate controls.  I have the vague recollection that we exchangednotes off-line and you were curious about my impressions.  I think it's about time I had some.

When you have a chance, and if you feel it reasonable.

Is there a PCB layout for the Hw89?. Is it available?

Doug was kind enough to supply the schematic a while back.  I built one using the layout on home-wrecker.  It was only after I had completed it that I realised that the layout was for pad per hole and not vero.  Oh well, you live and learn or you don't live long I suppose.  It took a little while but I manged to get it to work.  It looks a bit of a mess.  Always wondered if a PCB layout was available.

I made one a long time ago, i'll make it public with the same part numbering and no part values (just like the home wrecker layout), unless Doug says otherwise ;)
Cut it large, and smash it into place with a hammer.

I was going to post a vero layout I used for mine, but Doug wasnt using the forum at the time. Maybe now ?

BTW no part values, just comp numbers ;)

Doug_H

I have no qualms about you guys posting layouts. I like the ROG technique of leaving off the part values. That seems to work pretty well.

Just to recap, for anyone who wasn't around when I first posted this:

The hwy89 is my design, but it's in the public domain as far as I'm concerned. I want you to build it, have fun with it, enjoy it, etc, etc... I prefer that you don't post the schematic. That's not because of my design, I could really care less in this particular case. Although it's not directly lifted, part of it is a tweak to a seemingly unique part of a Dr. Z amp circuit. Dr. Z doesn't want his amp schems posted, so I don't want to be responsible for people reversing his amps (or part of them) by publicly posting this schematic. I know this is  not 100% foolproof (nothing is, really), but I don't want to make it any easier than necessary for the riff raff.

Now I get it. It's been a while since I first heard the sound clip of the Highway and I never found a schematic for it. Thanks for the schemo, Doug.

In the e-mail, I asked a question but didn't get an answer. Is that ultra-long sustain Highway's character or is it achieved with additional sustain pedal?

You'll have to ask ROG about their clip.

Doug

Paul Marossy

I don't remember mine having ultra-long sustain. Anyway, usually ROG will list how the clip was recorded and with what equipment...

JimRayden

I'll now wait for Mr.Tremblay to answer. :)

From my recollection it's a humbucker neck pickup. According to the home-wrecker.com writeup (not "homewrecker"- please don't forget the dash like I did  )  it's just the pedal, a cab sim and some reverb. My clip was done with a single coil neck pup. It's not a super sustainy singing pedal, then again, if you turn everything up loud enough my experience is *everything* sings. :D  This pedal sounds great at loud gigging volumes BTW. Not necessarily a bedroom pedal...

Yeah, I do remember that is one loud pedal! I haven't used it for a while, I should break it out again.  8)

Well, what I meant is it's not necessarily that distinctively toneful (jeez doug, what kind of description is *that*? ) at lower volumes. It's when you crank it up and ride the guitar volume that the real fun starts. It's meant to be used in a "bluesy" sort of way like that.

Doug

Paul Marossy

Oh, I see. I can also agree with that.

JimRayden

Yea, that's how I'm gonna use it. Loud on stage. :) Can't wait for my parts to arrive.

I also thought of a smokin' cool box for this thing. A metal enclosure covered in asphalt, and has one of those yellow stripes right through it. Gonna use some glue and lil' stones and black paint to achieve that. Like a real hunk of Highway. :D

Oh, what other transistors could be used in there? Can't find those particular ones anywhere.

You need something with fairly high hfe. My 2n5089's are around 700-800.

Could I get a copy of the schematic too doug?
That two clips sound awesome, kind of a mix between an old Orange and Marshall Blues sound!

JimRayden

I have a bagful of 2N5088's. I guess I'll have to rename the box to Highway 88 to match the transistors. :P

Looks like this year's craze will be Highway. You have lots of mailing to do soon, Doug. :D
