without opto-components ( :!: ):

can be modded by those skilled in the art a little for "sound"-purposes

(this principle can easily be adapted by more uptodate electrical amplifying devices... )

...I blame it on having been a long day...but I dont see it..cant decifer it..
..but since you're here, talking about tubecompressors...I'm about to take my first stumbeling steps into designing and building a supersimple vari-mu compressor..but these are new to me..do you know anything about how they work...and if so, if I draw up a first sketsh and mail to you, could you tell me if I'm on the right track?..
thanks..

sorry: "vari-mu" is too close to some current developments - so I don`t wanna talk about it...

Johan

..no problem...good luck with yours, and wish me luck with mine.. :D
...I am mostly after seeing if I got the principles down and how simple I can make it and still have it sounding decent..I never liked electronics that looks like the designer got payd buy how many components he used...simple circuits is my thing..

simple:

(this is a spin-off of today`s phase-sh*ft stuff - replace C1 with a resistor (maybe de-coupled/blocked by a large cap,
and you`re almost there... for CV: try anything you like)

Well mu means gain, right, so how do you vary the gain of a tube stage?  These two links may inspire you:

On another note, think of the bias modulated tremolo in old Fender amps.  What if the bias was not modulated by an LFO, but by a sidechain?

well..as I undersstand it..you can vary the mu of a tubestage by variyng the biasvoltage ( in simplified terms.. ). so, if Im correct it wouldnt need much more than a sidechain supplying a negative voltage mixed with the signal into the grid of a tube...as I said, I want to make it supersimple, so the end result might not be that great...but I'm only doing it to see if i got the fundamentals right...

..thank's "moose"...I've seen that one..but you know me..I always have to do thing my own way and if I can cut parts and simplify in any way, I will...and transformers and caps ( unless for filters..) are my enemies..there simply have to be another way..  ..I think I have it figured out..it'll be a while before I can test it..but think "cathodefollowers and voltagedoublers"...

Yeah... Cool, Johan! I'll be interested to see (and maybe hear) what you come up with.

I actually kinda like transformers, tho. I have an awesome little phantom powered DI box (Bo Hansen's design) that I built using a Lundhall traffo. 8)

Best!
