New "Univibed" Phase 45 -- Wirbelwind

Here's my freshly completed "Univibed" Phase 45, which I've called the Wirbelwind...German for "whirl wind."  It doesn't exactly whirl, but it's a very nice phaser nonetheless.

I used JC Maillet's modifications to the circuit and took Francisco Pena's PCB layout and modified it so that all the mods would work with the circuit board.  The changes that I made to the recommended modifications were:

-No toggle switch to go between filter capacitor values...uses the "Univibe" values recommended in the Viva Analog mods.
-500K reverse audio taper "Speed" pot.
-4K7 "top speed" resistor instead of 4K1.
-25KB "Mix" pot instead of 22KB.
-2N5485 JFETs....the 2N5952s that I got from Mouser turned out to be completely useless in the circuit.
-OPA2604 ICs.
-Added a 2M2 input pulldown resistor and a 1N4002 reverse polarity protection diode.

Here are some pictures of the circuit board and completed box:

You can see from the last picture that the box is pretty full...had a hard time getting all that in there, but it all fit...after a little persuasion ;)

VERY NICE
My German girlfriend would appreciate the name !!

Phillip,
I am wondering, do you find the intensity of the effect slightly lacking? I am wondering what might increase the depth. BTW Great job getting it in that size enclosure. Your pedals are always so cleanly done.

The phasing of the Phase 45 is quite subtle when compared to Phasers with more stages, like the Phase 90 and the Small Stone.  I guess part of the subtlty of the Phase 45 is because it's a 2-stange phaser.

Not sure how to increase the depth of the pedal, but it might be an interesting mod if a way exists.

Have you tried matching the fets? (as in the notes from JC Maillet)?

Hi Paul.  Yep, I matched the two FETs per JC's instructions...worked great!  I had to use a pair of 2N5485s instead of the original 2N5952 part number...none of the 15 5952s that I got would do anything until the "bias" pot was turned all the way clockwise.  After plugging in a couple of 5485s that I had, they woke up at the center of the "bias" pot's rotation.

I started with MPF 102's on the last one, not enough it would seem.
On this one, I used 6 closely clustered 2n5952, and swapped 'n picked 2 from those.
Mix would be the next thing I'd want to put a knob or switch mod on. The trimpot being a knob on the box works as a pseudo mix control...a depth reducer.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

It looks like Dragonfly has some serious competion in the quality department! Very nicely done inside and out!

Close ;)  It's some kind of synthetic fabric batting that I picked up somewhere...works great though :)

As usual Phillip, nice layout work, inside and out. 8)  8)  8)

I've also started using nice aluminum knobs on the pedals that I build now...plastic knobs just look and feel so cheap!  I get them all from Mouser, and even though they're about double (or more) the price of the plastic knobs, the way they look and feel definitely makes up for it...rock solid!

Thanks very much for posting your build parameters and pics Phillip  - that's amazing work !

I been getting into metal knobs too lately ... a little expensive but they give a great look and feel ...

Tele knobs are cool for FX use. 8)  Have you seen any 1/2" dia. ones? I'd like to find some of those.

Now, let's see who'll be the first to name the color that I used on the box.  Not just "reddish orange"...the actual name ;)  Fellow muscle car owners and lovers out there could name it in half a "heartbeat"!

"Corvette Red" ---- as in ... "America's heartbeat"    ???

Nope, but the color was used in the engine bays of most Corvettes from the mid 60s til the early to mid 70s ;)

could it be....................

grabber orange????

What kind of finish did you put on the box to give it that flake kind of finish? It looks seriously badassed! Did you use decal stock for the labeling or something else? Very smooth! How did you do the red and pink part on the bottom? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm very impressed with your work. One last question, can someone give me the mouser #'s for the aluminum knobs? They look amazing. It looks like you found a gold 3PDT somewhere, or maybe it's just your camera?
