Were the very original Vox V847 and CryBaby circuits identical? I read about this somewhere, but I forgot exactly what I read and where I found it...

Ah, c'mon, doesn't anyone know the answer to this?!  :)
IIRC, they are, but I was wanting verification on that...

I've heard the same thing.  If it's indeed the case, then there has to be some difference here and there, like maybe the inductor and voicing.  Now you got me curious.  :D

I'm sure that the actual inductors used are probably different - stack of dimes, Fasel, TDK5103, etc. - but the values in terms of mH should be roughly the same. I am wondering more about the actual resistors/caps. Some schematics of the "original CryBaby" show a pair of 0.01uF caps at the pot and some show 0.22uF caps. I believe that the 0.22uF caps version is the "original original" version, and it would apply to the Vox V847 and the first CryBabys.

All the Dunlop ones I've seen have had two .001uf caps at the pot except for the Hendrix model, which has a .22uf and a .022uf.  However, I did find this schematic for the Mister Crybaby:

The GCB-95 has two .22uf caps at the pot, I know that, which is the same as the Vox.

Actually, I think it's 0.001uF caps in the GCB-95. I'll have to check mine again.

Anyhow, I said 0.01uF caps at the pot in the reply above, but I meant to say 0.001uF caps at the pot...

Hey Paul,

Phillip has some VOX Clyde McCoy info - with pics/schematic etc - at his site.

http://fuzzcentral.tripod.com/

And there are some wah pictures here - maybe it will be of some help?

Hello,
From my experience of modding wahs [about 10 or so] i have noticed that the Vox V847, and the 80's crybaby wahs..  revision D are nearly exactly the same. except i have noticed that some of the the dunlops have an SI diode in the very upper right hand corner of the board?

This might be the site to check out: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/s.castledine/greenfuz/wah.html

I am not tech enough to tell you about the different voicing of the inductors or anything like that.. I'm sure if you email Stuart he will know.. plus he is a super nice guy..

hope this helps,
be well,

This seems to confirm what I was thinking. I bet the diode is something Dunlop added as a small improvement to the circuit...

OK, this is the page that I remembered reading a while ago. There is some discussion about the inductors and components used in the various Vox, Thomas Organ, JEN & Dunlop wahs. Interesting read for all you wah lovers.
