Is there any disadvantage to useing a 1W resistor in place of a 1/2 watt resistor besides space consumption?

not that meer mortals like us would be worried about. There are sometimes minute parasitic elements such as stray inductance that might in a billion years upset some super sensitive circuit...

the tolerance might be an issue though. It's as easy as falling off a log to find a 1% 1/4W resistor... much harder to find the same in a 1W.
