[Newbie Q] What are those insulating pads?

Inside some boxes I see what looks like insulation.  It's a pad of some stuff under the circuit board (that is always floating free inside the enclosure) so I guess it's preventing shorts to whatever is underneath the circuit.

Maybe different people use different materials?  If you would be kind enough to tell what you use, I would be grateful.

Thanks!

I have no idea but in the GEO FAQ (up above) it talks about using velcro.

I never bought or used the stuff, but it is available at craft centers.
Ask for or describe 'double sided sticky pad'.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Thanks, guys.

Hmm.  I didn't think it was that stuff, but you must be right Pete.  As an example, here's the inside of one of MartyMart's boxes.  If the pad is sticky, I don't think it's stuck down:  Grace-inside.jpg.
But I guess one can see some more of it stuck down under the jacks.

That looks like it might be what is called "fish paper." I keep a roll of it around for repairs.

I use 3M mounting squares to secure my PCB's. 3M double-sided foam sticky tape.

Alright!  Something brand new!  8) And it is an insulator.  Thanks, Erik!  :D

I wasn't going to stick my circuit board down if I could avoid doing so.  I think I have seen a few guts without a secured board.  When things get really crowded inside the enclosure I am guessing that nothing much moves around once the lid is on.  But one still needs to be sure that the circuit doesn't short out against something else.

I am trying to get a circuit into the Small Bear Sovtek clone of the Hammond 1590B enclosure.  (It seems to be a little smaller.) There are 4 jacks so things are a little tight.  But after laying all the caps down on their sides in my perf layout, it looks like the board will fit over the pots.  So then if I just lay some fishpaper over the pots maybe I'll be done.

Or?

FWIW, I found what Aron describes above in howto.pdf.
