i got a 20gb for christmas this year and the lcd screen cracked when i had the ipod in my pocket       i didnt fall or bump into anything or smash it or jolt it or whatever.  after a bit of research i learned that the 4th gen ones come from the factory with too much stress on the screens(you can tell thsi by seeing hte rainbow effect they display in sunlight).  so i bough a trashed 40gb on ebay to cannibalize for a replacement screen(its easy, just a ribbon cable) and im waiting for it in the mail.  apple and hp both have really bad customer service in regards to clearly defective products.

end rant sorry  im a *huge* music enthusiast and own more albums than anyone i know, so the ipod is like a favorite of mine and ive been bummed at having a 20gb ipod shuffle for the last 2 months with this broken lcd business.

You're right, Apples record for "customer care" - these days - is not very
good at all !!
I preferred them when they built their stock in Canada  !!
The "8500" and "9500" series were built like "Tanks" !

I have a first generation 10 gig Ipod, which still works after three years
abuse !
Battery lasts about 2 hrs though now .....

you can get replacement batteries for cheap, less than 30 bucks from what ive seen i believe.  its really easy to open the ipod, i use a guitar pick to pry the front casing off.  the battery is just connected with a little 4 pin connector.

Marty, I ordered one from macsales.com

Replaced it in about 8 minutes. Easy, easy easy. Cheap too.

I gave my Orig. iPod to my Dad, I now have the iPod Photo. 8)

Did I miss something? The ipod diy sight is only concerend with associated items (batt./amps) - not really making an MP3 player from individual parts right?

that'd be a hell of a diy!

it would be...although the part count of the ipod does seem alot lower than i would expect on the motherboard/board for the headphone jack.  the main thing seems to be the actual hard disk and all.  its very possible to assemble one yourself from parts, and id venture to say you could make your own motherboard if you were really dedicated.  although theres no reason, you can grab one on ebay for 20 bucks.

If you're interested in making your own mp3 player from scratch check out these two sites:

I believe that these may have been posted in the lounge a while ago.
