Folks,

I want to gift an old friend of mine (tip 'o the hat to Mark Hammer for the idea!) who plays Southern rock and blues. He plays an original non-reverse Firebird through a Marshall combo (don't know which one) and sometimes uses an old Boss distortion box.

Any southern rockers here? What's standard issue in the Skynyrd toolbox?

You should build:

Fuzz-Face (germanium)
Rat
Brown sound in a box
Any marshall "brown sound" overdrive will do....

or that Overdrive that ZZ-top uses i can't remember the name of it, but it's a chrome enclosure that's circular (similar to a fuzz face's enclosure).

Screw all that! ROG New Clipper. More gain than a Tube Screamer with a fuller tone. Plug it into a clean amp and you'll get the perfect amount of distortion for Skynrd type stuff.

Marshall combo (don't know which one).
Here's where I'd start, at the speaker end of the chain...
 Depending...~
and sometimes uses an old Boss distortion box.
Messing with this position in the chain could do some magic, what is the amp?
To me, Skynerd is everything from a boosted reverbed amp to less than metal, post psychadelia.
I saw some footage and it looked to me like there was a fair amount of preparation going on behind the Huge Tones. They probably figured out the speaker thing, then picked/tweeked to get amps that 'work with all those Fuzz/OD boxes etc.
For overall usability with a wide variety of stuff and also for nice med to crunch tones, a seriesed Mu Amp type design may be found to be of excellent service.
For 'Southern rock and blues.' and skynerd in particular I'd use some LP filter[s on a FF for the lead parts.
All depends on how the pickups amp and everything inbetween is tuned, maybe try some circuit]s, socket some stuff or breadboard, see what you can get, then look at the amp...?
I find it's much less stressful to tweek at less than lethal voltages.
