I am attempting to repair an old pedal that belongs to a friend. It is a "Royal Double Effect Machine" that he bought in Japan in the 60's. The effects are fuzz and cry, which is a wah-wah effect. I need to replace the potentiometer in the wah portion. The existing pot is 50k, with"J93r" written on the back, with a D shaft to accomodate a set screw in the pedal linkage. My question is, should I use a 50k linear or log pot? The dedicated wah pots I find (Fulltone, Teese, etc) are 100k, in addition to being very expensive. Mouser has a 50k D shaft that appears to be the exact size I need, both in linear and log taper. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I don't see why a linear pot wouldn't work. You could measure the existing one and see what it reads at the midpoint. If it's around half of the pot value, then it's a linear pot. If it is something significantly different than half the pot value, then it's probably some sort of log pot.

would soldering a 100K fixed resistor in parallel with a 100K pot work (as the total resistance in parallel  is 50K)?

Yep, it would.  8)
