Hi,

I'm having a go at building an Acoustic 360-in-a-box based on Charlie Barth's layout (moosapotamus).  I'm trying to get my parts list together and noticed on the layout that there's only one transistor that is labeled.  It is marked 2N1306.  I'm having a tough time sourcing this transistor.  Does anyone have any clues as to where I could find this or a reasonable substitute?  In the layout, it's the third tranny from the left.  Is it just a matter of finding another transistor with similar gain?  Or is there more to transistors than that?

It's part of the fuzz effect; an NPN germanium.

I'm using an AC187 for my Acoustic 360 fuzz-only pedal (now in testing).

You may need to adjust the 47K/100K resistors that connect to its collector for biasing purposes.

You can sub an NTE101 for a 2N1306 - not cheap though. I think Mouser carries these.

This cross-reference database may help you out in the future.

Thanks ErikMiller & AL.  I think I have a couple of AC128's in a fuzz pedal that I was thinking taking out (they're not matched).  Now I have something else to use one in!  Hopefully that'll work.

AL

Nope, sorry. The AC128 won't work. An AC128 is a PNP. The schematic is layed out for NPN transistors. Steve at small bear has some transistors that will work or the NTE 101 will sub.

Ok, thanks AL. You definitely saved me some grief!

You also could try a low gain/(low Hfe) Si NPN Transistor  (e.g. a moderate power type) - R.G. or Jack Orman have dicussed the use of those in Fuzz Face Circuits.
They are much cheaper than Ge Types and less trouble - and maybe are ok for that circuit.
