my pedals sound awful!  :x

i recently discovered that i have zero use for my DIY distortion pedals! they all sound awful on my rig! Through my live / preferred amp (SS) , they sound painfully bright, and cheesily sharp. Through my practice amp (tube) they sound murky (my Dr. Boogey sounds like pure mush).

they all sounded good on my "testing" amp (half watt SS First Act amp), but through an amp i might actually use, they are just plain ugly.

guess i have to go mod them to suit my setup...  :(

(end rant)

Maybe the speaker cabinet does the difference. Maybe some speaker simulator can soften the high end

irony is, my practice amp is through a 4x12, and my live amp is through a 2x12. my test amp has a single 4". but i like the idea. i think i had better bump up a sim on my build list...

thanks for the suggestion!

I always test my builds on as many "amps" as poss and also my JMP-1
I would think the speakers will play a significant part also !!

"Dont panic" I'm sure its just a "roll off" cap here and there :D

Alot of influence to voicing a source like a pickup, and matching that to an amp can be done in a SB.
Voicing of typical Signal Paths include everything from pickups to speakers.
What circuits, pickups etc. have you chosen to work with?
I've gotten a 'feel' for the difference between my RCA lab amp and my MKII's 'fiercer' general voicing and high end, and can target voicing pretty good for the big amp using the little amp to tweek on...pretty good, but I find myself taking the boxes back to the lab after MkII testing.
That said, I suggest picking one of the tube amps, then choosing a Distortion circuit based on your trials.
ALot depends on what the amp is 'already' doing. if you're starting with a relative clean tube channel...or...
I'm still messing with what it takes for 'optimum' results.
Have you had better %age results with a non DIY Pedal, if so, which one?

Yep - it sounds like you have to start testing with things you actually use :-)
