Never built a compressor before, and actually havent ever used one for very long. but I'm looking for one that will have audible breathing when left to sustain on its own. this'll sound great with feedback and a good complement to the sounds im going for.

so which one of the more common DIY compressors will do this?
any recommendations?

Most will to some degree, "Orange Squeezer" is a classic and one that
gets used the most, close second would be the "Flatline" for me !!

er, can you explain a bit more please? I keep seein the OS come up, and it looks easy enough, but I'd think something with a control for "sustain" or "compression ratio" would be more suitable?

and, why the flatline? (this'd be neat with Mark H's mod to make it a "punchline")

OK, well the "OS" does seem to be lacking controls, but the trim pot sets
the amount of compression ( albeit a very fine amount of range )
I have mine set so you can hear it, rather than feel it, so it has a nice
"bloom" of sustain on ringing chords, but is also nice and "choppy" with
fast strumms etc.
The Flatline seems like a "Dynacomp" but with some more character and
less "hiss' !!
This can also do what you seem to want and has a proper comp & vol
control ( external controls )
Another option may be Craig andertons compressor, but you have to run
a +9 and -9 supply to it.
Wonderful quality, but no so nice on more extreme settings as it gets a bit "wobbly" as it sustains, but for more subtle use its fantastic.

Hope that helps some ?

thanks marty,

well i've never used the dynacomp, so i dont know what that's like. I'm guessing my use is more on the extreme, less subtle side. So i seem to be moving towards the Flatline I spose.

anyone else?

I love my Craig A. Compressor.... very quiet, transparant and works like a compressor should. I added a LED because you don't notice it is on ;)

Team it up with an Orange Squeezer to get the best out of both worlds. I made the Craig A. with a OS "afterburner" so I can choose it to color my sound a bit.
