I can't seem to figure the pintout of these, googling and NTE'ing...
Trying all positions [no bent lead yet] in the DMM to find what they are.
 I put one in a FF Q2 as I would a 3904 or 2222...

I'm having trouble measuring any Hfe or finding any utility for these....

BC169 perhaps???

If so, my very old Philips guide says TO-72 case, NPN, hfe 240-900, four pins, one connected to metal case (shield lead), suggested replacement BC549

But no clear info about pins, seven variants shown in the book for TO-72

I guess I'll try bending leads 1&2 and test one, then another with 2,3 bent.

The lead pinou on anything that's still an operating bipolar transistor can be identified down to two possibilities with an ohmmeter.

Set your ohmmeter to the diode range on ohms, and measure all leads in both directions, to all other leads. This is six tests. Note which leads conduct to which others and in which direction. A working bipolar will show conduction from the base to two other leads in one direction only. Reversed directions or  different pins will not. Then there are only two possible choices for collector and emitter. You can test silicon versus germanium by comparing diode readings agains known silicon and germanium junctions.

If the transistor is damaged, or not a bipolar transistor, this process will fail.

A JFET will show conduction from the gate to both other leads, in one direction, not in the other, but the drain/source will conduct resistively (not shorted) in both directions as well, and this "resistance" will almost always be different from the gate values.

On a MOSFET, only the substrate diode conducts one direction from source to drain.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Plastic, TO-92 package, follows one of the less common, but still standard pinouts. With leads down, looking at the flat side, left-to-right: E, C, B.

Thanks everyone !!!
Now I think I can test 'em on the DMM N/P!!!
