I have a dream to carve like Carver Doug, sure long way off, but I carved this kit strat (finally!) with a taboo cross and Gemini yin-yang, wood burned for good measure, then decided to paint using grain as the lines. Of course Rainbow is my favorite color (they get jealous, those colors...) so...so far...

A bit sad the faceplate will cover so much...

Do you know of Cindy Guitars, one of the luthiers at Carmine Street Guitars in New York City. One of her talents is woodburning, pickguards, guitars tops, whatever...   time to add another distraction to the repertoire and burn a pickguard.

Wow! That is a fine artist there! And wood pick guard with burned designs does sound great... I love it!

No, an old woodburner from Harbor Freight. The finer tip broke off, but luckily I'd finished the olive leaves by then. Was thinking to use my old soldering iron, but after I jammed the wood burner back together (old, cheap) it worked fine... and now I'm wondering what Cindy over at Cindy Guitars uses for those fine lines...

Major talent as are the other two in the shop, their primary wood source is old city building teardowns, wood can be a couple hundred years old.

She puts up many 'works in progress' videos on Instagram, she has a very fine tipped iron for the detailing.

everyone here will have seen all those how it's made shows - there was one ep featured some geezers making guitar bodies from glue and old skateboard decks. mainly glue. they turn out [thin horrific] candy strpes.

no, well, i just went and looked at a series listing - it would seem that there is aboot a thousand eps i haven't seen, or at least don't remember. couldn't see the skate guits mentioned.

Built a valvecaster and mini amp, in custom 3d printed enclosures. Thought they look pretty neat!

Dazzle us all and make a glass pickguard so we can all see the guts of the guitar and you will have a surface that would resist any scratching.  Polycarbonate or acrylic would scratch easily, so get your furnace going, make a mould and prepare to cast the clear pickguard.  Or mix a little potassium permanganate into the glass melt and get a nice violet colour.

Oof, now to build a kiln! Or maybe ask my friend Max upstate to blow a glass one... darn it Ron! Ah...put the plastic on first...burn a beautiful old wood one to replace it...then a big old fire to melt broken car glass with a bit of potatoes and pomegranates to pour in a mould, etch with battery powered diamond tip tool, done!

I do have a thin slice of olive though, maybe that for the pickguard, with switches mounted for pickup order/phase switching...hmm...

(I always thought it'd be cool to hand build a ceramic acoustic guitar, or a blown glass but what a nightmare fretting it properly! Still, I wonder on the sound...)

glad to see i got that wrong too. i'm not real keen on that sand-thru look, i'd much prefer the candy stripes east-west, just not those colours they like to clash together.

Aesthetically I think the pencil crayon guitar is far more interesting than the skateboard versions I've seen. Have seen lots of other products made from boards that are very very cool but the guitars not. Maybe they just haven't been tackled by the right artist yet.
