Regardless,
The VU Meter is slick!

1000 Posts!!!!! ;D

Is this the biggest thread ever (on this board?)

BTW uploaded some more layouts and pics on my layout gallery - should be up soon...

markm

The thread that won't die.....

Hiwatt25

MarkM, you are one prolific builder.  Another fine job!

I win :-D.

I've been away from stomp boxes a bit, but here's what I've ben working on:

modified my bench power supply a bit - now it has a built in "panel meter" for the adjustible output - controlled by a pic 16f88.  Also now has fixed 5v output, as well as the variable and preset 9v.  It is set to 3.1 volts at the time.

Binary Clock.  It was 17:59:11 at the time of the picture.  Brighter in real life than in the picture.

Nixie tube clock.  Also brighter in real life than in the picture.  Controlled the same way the binary clock is - I built the binary one as an afterthought, since I already had the "brains" done.

Like I said, not too many stomp boxes, but I've been keeping busy this summer :-D.

Thank you Hiwatt, you are very kind  :)

So.....Hal, did ya ever think this thread you created would become such a Monster??
BTW, I love the tube clock!!

disto

hey Hal i love the sponge bob behind your binary clone!!

dano the Red Llama Clone enclosure looks really good is that a glitter effect on it!

Snuffy

MarkM - the Orange Squeezer case is way awesome.

Hal - awesome clocks... any links to how-tos? I've been wanting to build (or modify an existing) digital watch or clock with simple big red numbers

I think my explanations assume a lot.  Basically, most of the functions, such as setting the clock, displaying the time, and keeping the time are handled by the microcontroller (pic 16f628a).  The schematic, as you can see, is relatively simple.  I get a time base from the 60hz of the AC line, condition it (explained in those threads), and feed that to the microcontroller.  The rest is ASMOP :-D.

There is _tons_ of stuff out there about making clocks, especially nixie tube and propellor (hopefully my next project) clocks.  There are so many different way to do them - with crystal oscillators, GPS/radio recievers, power line ripple with microcontrollers or logic...I kinda like these projects becuase there's a lot for me to learn, it is possible for me to actually undestand all the functions (unlike many stomp boxes), and they are also practical projects.

Here is my Spyder Power Supply. I couldn't buy enough jacks to connect all the outputs, so there are still many empty holes. But at least I have a painted box to show.

The blue base paint was done with a rattle can, but the rest was done with an airbrush.

Gilles

markm

Now that's cool Gilles......airbrush?

Hal

wow.  Thats one of the nicest finishes I've seen.  Did you have a stencil for the lightning?

Gilles C

Yes... an airbrush...

No stencil for the lightning, it was done freehand, using only the airbrush.

I used a stencil for the head, and I used an old stencil maker to make a stencil for the letters to give a kind of industrial look. I also wanted something to give a feeling of power.

I glued aluminum foil shiny-side up onto the box. Then shot it with a few coats of semi-transparent red gloss. I was a bit overzealous and ended up with a few runs. So I tried something new:

1. Shot it with a fresh coat of red.
2. Before it could dry, I poured acetone on top of it.
3. Lit it on fire.
4. Let it flame and bubble for about 20 seconds.
5. Repeated 1-4 until I ran out of beer.

The end result is very wild. I'm going to work on this technique more as soon as my wife (who caught me in the act of creating giant flameballs in the garage) lets me buy beer again.

Creativity at it's best!
Nice work there.
Sometimes the "other-half" doesn't fully understand that there's a method to the madness.

Gilles C

You should take pictures of it when it's burning and bubbling to show us...

Gilles

Big Red

or make a full blown photo-essay :D

That could not be more hilarious. I can't wait to try this. The beer, I mean.

Feel free. Just don't have your next of kin coming after me with a shotgun when it goes bad and you die :)

Cue 1980's Pepsi commercial shoot with Michael Jackson: "Arrrr!!! Jermaine! Tito! My goddman hair's on fire!"

markm

How 'bout Richard Pryor;
"when you're on fire....people get out of your way!"
