I've only been doing this for about 2 or 3 weeks now.

My very first attempt was a "3 Legged Dog" from the Runoffgroove site.
Here's a pic:

I mounted it in an old floppy disk case.  (Note: Gain pot was removed to use in another project, so it's not shown in the pic)

My second project was a JFET Bootstrapping breadboard that I didn't care for the tone of, so it was never built into a box.

My third project which I just finished last week was an MXR Distortion + with a couple mods.
I dropped it in a generic Radio Shack box and painted it metal flake red.   I used the only knobs I had laying around that would fit the pots...
I haven't picked up the footswitch to drop in the box, but plan on it today.   This thing sounds awesome.

what did u use to paint the dist + ?

I got a dumb noob question, how does one post photographs?

I prefer http://www.imageshack.us, they will also give you the correct code for forums. Also of note is that the images seem to be available forever.

the enclosures look sweet too! how did you do the lettering?  decal? t-shirt transfer?
Yeah man, that green apple pedal is stunning!  Tell us how you did that!

i played with about 10 different kinds of paint to find a really durable combination. drilled the enclosure perfectly using a set square. sprayed 3 coats of industrial strength automotive self-etch primer in a spray booth i made from an old fridge modded with a fan and air filter. wet the sides down and let the air circulate and it mostly eliminates dust specs. then i sprayed 3 coats or so of an enamel in the colour i wanted. here's the magic that might disappoint you: i've tried so many ways of labeling enclosures, etching is cool but takes me lots of attempts to get perfection. tshirt decals get bubbles (i suppose i'm not careful enough) and you can see the edges. stickers were horrible. so i had a screen print made up. for that i had to create a jig from aluminium to hold the enclosure perfectly in place and have the screen print 1mm above. i used an enamel screen printing ink and baked the pedals in a toaster over which i bought for that purpose. i sprayed about 4 coat of urethane clear which is REALLY hard durable stuff! from experimentation i learnt that you have to be VERY careful not to let it run, and you can only bake it at low temperatures to avoid discolouration, so i suppose it's best just to wait a couple of weeks before any out-of-the-bedroom use.

if there's interest i've considered making a tutorial with everything that i've learnt through MANY mistakes. it would be nice to contribute more to the forum.

i breadboarded this and it sounds really cool. not sure if it does what it's supposed to though?
It's supposed to at least cut all bass, and using the 1N5819 shouldn't be a problem, used it too without a problem. just higher amperage, and some dealer just stock the highest value it seems.

zj

it does cut bass, and gives a cheap sounding distortion, which is what i want, but the level drops drastically and doesn't make any difference if it has power or not. unless one of my components if faulty (what could be? it's such a simple circuit!) then i guess it's supposed to be like that since it's behaved exactly the same on breadboard and pcb.

here's another one... it's using an inkjet decal. i tried the laserjet one and it didn't take my colour toner!! most annoying... it says 'mintdrop' reading downwards on the side. the knobs and switch were supposed to go where the claws are... this one was abandoned because of the bubbles and because you can see the line where the decal cuts off. i also have this in a laser engraved version...

edit: if anyone wants to develop a pedal with this image then let me know and i can send it to you as .ai, .eps, or as a some kind of bitmap at the resolution you want. i don't want this beautiful design going to waste. the deal would be that you'd have to post pics though! obviously you could remove the 'dazatronyx' at the bottom and the mintdrop text and replace it... i like the title though

Well it´s just that i see here people using metal printing plates, or stencil, an other finishing techniques, like flamed wood, or water drops....really beautiful boxes i would even use them as decoration at home...My technique is sooo basic and humble...just B/W laser printer over adhesive paper, and laminated with....."TRANSPARENT SCOTCH TAPE!!!"...

Well apart of the humble technique, i´m kind of proud of the graphic design..the "dual rectal" really evocates a MESA..and the professor tweed looks like a mini fender amp.....

Next project i´ll use color printed adhesive paper and a thicker transparent laminate...

dschwartz, that is some good stuff. looks like a professional designed case. i did get a chuckle out of 'dual rectal' tho  :icon_rolleyes:

dschwartz

With this kind of work..how couldn´t i feel ashamed of a b/w printed paper?

and yes..i think "dual rectal" is a pretty original and descriptive name, and funny too!!!.. how is that no one came up with it before??
I just couldn´t help it..with so many emulations called RECTO??
