It's gilded with variegated gold leaf then clear coated.

It's actually really quick and easy.


1. sand box *really* smooth.

2. undercoat

3. Apply Acrylic Gold size

4. leave for 15 or so minutes until the size is tacky.

5. Apply the gold Leaf.

6. Use squirrel hair paint brush to adhere gold leaf to enclosure.

7 Repeat until enclosure is covered.

8. Use a harder bristle brush to smooth out the gold leaf and remove all excess gold leaf flakes.

9. Clear coat.

10. Allow to dry.

11. sand.

12. Clear coat.

13. sand

14. Clear Coat.

15. Sand

16. Clear coat

Stop when bored.

How durable is the finish once it's been clear coated?

As durable as the clear coat. The size is essentially glue, you're gluing a thin layer of metal onto the box.

I have no idea what the large screw cap w/chain is, but it was on there when I got it, and I didn't wan to take it off.

I'm really liking that old box. Looks like a junction box of some kind. Looks like it was a low-voltage thingmajig with what looks like the shell of an old amphenol connector there.

The decal was there when I got it. My educated guess is, hold for 3 seconds to end the world. The decal were actually done on an old German decal machine.

with what looks like the shell of an old amphenol connector there.

Searched google... so that's what I ripped out of there.

It was possibly a dosimeter charger. The 3 seconds charges the dosimeter.

What type of clear coat did you use over the leaf nelson?  I've had poor results spraying clear coat over gold leaf. It always kills the natural shimmer of the gold and looks dull when I try it, but yours looks excellent!

another recent build. it's two triangle big muffs as switchable channels. one switch bypasses, the other picks which channel




don't worry, no goop alarm here it's liquid electrical tape. you paint it on and it adheres and protects like electrical tape. i use it both to make sure nothing shorts a trace and it also happens to provide a HUGE amount of strain relief for the wires. I also drip it over the back of LEDs so as to direct all light in he right direction.
