And some swirlies I did a while back

I figured I'd post them.

I love that smokey effect you get but manage to keep the colors separate.

That's nice, Andy. I'm usually not much on swirls, but that is classy.

I don't like swirls in general - but every once in a while, there's one that kind of "pops". That marble-y one is pretty nice.

This is one of the most amazing paint jobs I've ever seen.

That white and orange one is stunning as well.

I thought this would be a good thread to ask in, since it's basically about finishing enclosures....

When people do hand painting on a box (I'm guessing already powder-coated), ala ZVex or Penny Pedals, what kind of paint should be used?  Acrylic?  Enamel?  And do they clearcoat it afterwards, or does it stay in good shape?  I have a couple ideas for some nice, hand done designs.  :icon_razz:

Thanks!

Taylor

I've done a couple recently using acrylic with resin epoxy clear coat. Search the forum for epoxy; there are some good threads that cover it. If done right, it dries to a super-hard, very shiny and flat surface - almost like glass.

I believe this is roughly the method that the ZVex painters use. The eopxy is a pourable kind, not the type you get in a dual syringe package. Acrylic and enamel (I've used both) will not stay put on an enclosure without a clear coat.

Woah... weird and awesome box there. Where'd you get it?

Etienne, how do you keep the sides of your boxes from looking runny? When I've done the epoxy, the vertical surfaces didn't stay nice and smooth like yours because the epoxy is too liquidy and runs off quickly.

do you mean mine? It's just a hammond 1590BB. The brass part is something from my parts bin. I think it was part of an old reel-to-reel that I parted out.

Lol at MBM Capacitor. Where you get it in Australia?
Btw - it is not a good cap.. MBM's have a big current leakage.. And it's old, so it maybe very dry..

eBay. I've got a heap of them in common values. So far they all test good and sound good. I use them in valve amps.

I think buying that tube protection from banzai is absurd... it's just a grid! every diyer here can replicate it spending 1 dollar.
V.

It`s NOT just the grid/grille...
They were available from E-H direct - Aron had them in his shop - get them quick as long as the supply lasts...

I don't know if you guys know, but Banzai sells the EH tube enclosures.
A bit pricey, though: 26.12 Euro.
But not that hard to replicate, I think. And also a good protection.

even I can replicate it, when I don`t try to bend it too hastily over the broomstick... :

(cut out the sheet, file the corners, mark the holes, drill pilot-holes, drill large, remove the crap* from the back-side,
sand it, bend, anodize** it...)

andrew that looks completelly sick! did you etch it with the bolted-on metal or without?

I apply it twice. the second time twenty minutes later when the mix has turned a little syrupy. I use the underside of a plastic spoon to keep the top from having too much, and the excess oozes down the sides.

it rarely turns out this good, though. usually there is some noticable streaking.
