How do you cut slots in metal? I need to do this for something but couldn't ever figure out a way to get straight, clean cuts. Was thinking about getting it done by Front Panel Express, but it's going to cost $80.

See the little round holes just ahead of where the slider tabs are positioned? I drill a hole big enough to get my jigsaw blade into.

Theres a bunch of ways to do it from the painfully slow and tedious to the quick and dirty and the reciprocal of that is expense. If your careful you could start by drilling a small hole at the width you want then get a router cutter at 3mm and put your drill press on it's slowest speed, and with a set of guides on the deck of the press, set the router blade in your drilled hole at the top end of its cutter (right next to the shank where it strongest in bending) then slowly work the hole into a slot. You'd have to work slowly as router blades at that diameter usually have only one blade.

The slowest way would be to put guides on the enclosure itself and use a hacksaw blade but that'd be even slower.

Another option would be to find some fine cutting blades for a hand held grinder. Lots of ways of doing it.

Hmm, yeah. I need 21 slots, so... I guess Front Panel Express is the way to go for me.

Taylor have you tried using a nibbler?  Even if you can't use it on that project they are great to have.

Here's my burst box or formely known as ''the circuit box with a burst button''. I've made it accordingly with the schem of MikeH (http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=76932.msg632630#msg632630). The only mod i've made are adding a burst pot to control...well you know, the amount of burst. The artwork was a generous gift from my daughter. I've reel my own coil an use a phosphate coated nail for the mojo and because it sound warmer to my ears. Once you push that burst button...it's really transparent!

As far as the nibbler goes, does it eat your hands up really bad?  I don't use it anymore because i always wind up with pinch bruises and achy palms.

Wow , no I have never had that problem. Maybe you could put some padding on the handles or take smaller bites when you use them. They could be worn out.

Yeah, that's not a bad idea. How is the end result? If I cut a slot with one of these, are the edges smooth or rough?

No, "you are not alone" !!! (it's just paper printed on an inkjet and some transparent adhesive paper on, no sandin, no paint... no pain!!)

The nibblers leave clean edges.

   If I can't get excited by the sound I don't bother some don't even get the dignity of having an enclosure. At some point I may put together an enclosure that has connectors on it that will let me swap out circits. Project costs / time drop  significantly.

Awesome work, everyone!
Now I can finally contribute something myself.

My newest creation:  the SCRAT

It is - of course - yet another RAT clone.. I'd say somewhere between Beavis' FKR and the BYOC Mouse. The graphics were done in Visio, then printed on white label paper and clearcoated with about 6 layers (matte lacquer). I tried to match the font for the name of the pedal to the original. Hope I don't get sued by the Ice Age copyrught holders 

For the electronics, I used one of forum member Soggybag's nice PCBs that have the stomp switch as well as the I/O and power jacks directly on the board. It was quite comfortable to work with this template. More info here: http://www.super-freq.com/?page_id=2

I compared it to an original RAT, and I must say my stompbox definitively captures the "essence" of the RAT's sound while offering a lot more options (which one might need or not need  )
