You're absolutely right. I was checking it out on my phone, so I saw the pictures, scrolled down a little bit and saw a bunch of comments on your build (which is remarkably cool by the way) and assumed that the MIDI box I was looking at was you. Just fixed my comment.

Fuzz Face and a Tonebender MKII in one enclosure. Uses a LM3046 transistor array (gains = 118)  and on board relays and LEDs to simplify the wiring

That's neat! Did you have to mess with the bias resistors much, or are they pretty stock builds? If you have the same values for fuzz and vol you could use dual gang pots, although as you have it now with the foot switch I guess you can have overdrive and fuzz at a stomp.

Others have done it before, but I'm looking at these array chips with the diff pairs for superfuzz variations. Nice variation on the Face Bender idea.

Gabriel, that may be one of the sexier gutshots on this thread. I don't have the patience, steady hands, or eyesight for surface mount, but I have a lot of respect for those that do. You took a complicated idea (especially compared to the general fuzz/drive stuff neanderthals like myself mess with) and put it together in an organized and elegant way.

Thank you, but the circuit is really incredibly simple.  The input with the opto is basic MIDI standard, and circuits are everywhere, and the rest is just running traces to the IC.  Electronically, it is simpler than some fuzz boxes.

On a side note, though, you may be surprised that surface mount is less tricky than you think. All the stuff I build, I've been converting to surface mount because it's easier, faster, cleaner, easier to debug, cheaper... I usually only use 1206 and SOIC sized parts, not the really tiny parts that a lot of people are using so the size isn't so scary. I don't use an oven or stencil, just a modified technique similar to what I would use for through hole parts.

These days I find surface mount parts SO much easier than through hole, I've even caught myself trying to figure out how to start making tube amps with surface mount parts!  I'm probably not actually going to do that one, though.  I have put some surface mount stuff in amps, but only control stuff - micro controller to handle switching, and an oscillator for a tremolo.  I stick with 0805 parts for the most part, and can do them without any vision equipment, but for those sod523 diodes, I have to wear a jewelry loop! 

It does help getting a really nice circuit board made, with proper solder mask and all, but once you learn the techniques (drag soldering, and good reflow technique), anyone can handle surface mount.
