Hey everybody.

For long I have wanted to try and build my own effects. But I just haven't gotten around to do it. I always liked having electronics class in school, but I guess I never took it serious enough to actually do something about it. A strobelight and a couple of flashy LED-thingys was all it ever came to.

Now I'm alot older, and much better at playing guitar. And now I can appriciate the joy of having built something from scratch all by yourself. But it takes a little practice. So I figured I'd start out with something easy that every guitarist can use. I have ordered the RTS board for an MXR Microamp from Tonepad, and the parts from Small Bear. I haven't recieved any of it yet, but when I do I'm sure this forum will be good place for me to be. I'll probably be asking a bunch of dumb questions, but please bare with me. I have read through the FAQ a couple of times, and just surfed around the web for any little piece of good advice for newbie effects builders. So I hope that will take the edge of my dumbest questions.

Looking forward to all the good advice from you guys!

Christian

Welcome to the forum and I hope you have fun with your first build.

The micro amp is good!

I've built one and it's a nice addition to the front of your pedal board.

Hey...! Welcome !!
 here's my little 2c dribble
Wiring the board first then using some kind of 'stays' for the offboard wiring produces 'clean' projects...no broken strands of wire. I drill a hole in the edge of the board and feed the offboard wiring through them, or forget that the 9v battery clip doesn't fit through and use a ziptie after soldering it in without stays.
Chip should have a socket so it doesn't get burned by the soldering iron, and must have it's pin 1 oriented, the polarized caps have must be oriented too.
Good luck on your first build !!!

Fret Wire

Welcome. :D  Excellent choice for a first project. It is a nice sounding booster. Also, no components to match, bias, or fine tune. If you haven't noticed already, Tonepad has a separate section on wiring. Depending on the switch used, led/no led, or use of a dc jack, you then simply pick the appropriate wiring layout.

If you're not sure which wiring layout to use once you get your parts in, we'll be able to help you. If you have any trouble with the pedal, follow the posting advice on this link, and it will make helping you so much quicker.

All: Thanks for the welcome and for the advice on wiring. Still waiting for the parts to show up. Can't wait to get on with it though.
