hi there,

i just brought about 50 2n5486's... i was thinking if are they suitable for typical runoffgroove aplications (amp stages and such) or phasers/vibratos/etc

will they give me similar results to, say, a j201 or a mpf102?

what kind of biasing considerations will i have to take?

thanks

omarmac

I tried 2N5486 in a BSIAB2 and nothing is far from a J201 than 2N5486, they gave me the worst result. Better use a 2N5457...

mm, i've already looked at the datasheet, but i'll be honest: i can't understand it a lot...

omar, what kind of "worst" result did them gave you?

if they aren't usable.. ..oh my.... i have a handfull...

nordine

btw, comparing both datasheets, i can't see any radical difference between the 2n5486 and the 2N5457 specs ( but thats only result of my poor analysis..)

Just out of curiosity, if you didn't know what these were good for, why did you buy so many? :?

omarmac

Well, they don't distort at all. I just got a clean signal, although they're very quiet... Anyway I think you could find a better use for them (a buffer for example, or a booster). But I don't recommend them with those runoffgroove aplications.

(Sorry the bad english)

nordine

heheh

i was out of my country and the prices were really great, and just couldn't help it

In my country they're a little expensive almost $0.75 per unit. But I still can't find those J201...

(Gusto en conocerte nordine, ¿estas en el foro de guitarramanía?, te lo recomiendo bastante, sobre todo porque está en español... mi nick también es el mismo ahí. Saludos.)

Who know's ?
Bias a gain stage with one and drive it hard with a [?] nother stage...
There's probably going to be an "RF" guy looking for those on Ebay.
I'm guessing they're for RF and being such high freq, they're meant to 'quickly cleanly" do whatever they do in the RF range of freq's, therefore designed with gain as least priority.
I can't even remem the part # I used in my Jfet phasers, maybe they're similar to what you have...just a wild guess, since you have so many to choose a Vgs/off matches from.
I'd think someone wouldhave posted telling you that though.
