Hi all-
Love the new digs Aron. Might tweak the theme though :)

I was looking to identify the fuzz used on the song "A Girl Like You" by Edwyn Collins.
This is the real fuzzy 60's type fuzz (I don't know how to describe it).

This song is on the Charlie's Angel's Full Throttle" soundtrack. You can listen to
it on Amazon here:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00009MGGL/104-7197722-3299112?v=glance
Someone must know what type of fuzz this is.

Thanks
Glenn (feeling fuzzier already) :P

Lead guitar (solo) in "axis bold as love" (hendrix) does sound familiar? so go for the axis fuzz then...

However, I would say "Girl like you" sounds not as vintage as thought. It could be digital or schmitt triger-like circuitry.

Hey Steben-
Yes, I was afraid it might be a digital effect.
What effects are Schmitt trigger based?
Are there sound clips anywhere of the Axis Fuzz?

Check this out: http://guitargeek.com/rigview/20/ and choose your fuzz ;)

I heard somewhere it is a tone bender direct into the mixing board for that kinda fuzz

He's a real vintage nut so I doubt it's digital.  Shame I threw out all my guitar mags years ago, I think one of them had the run down of his gear...

Great Fuzz sound.

Hmmm, interesting setup, and not what I expected:
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay
Boss TU-12H Chromatic Tuner
Colorsound Tone Bender Fuzz
Guyatone WR-2 Wah Rocker Envelope Filter
MXR Micro-Amp Preamp

I'm surprised you can get that sound out of a Tone Bender. Maybe the MXR Microamp
contributes to the sound?

Thanks for the information!

I actually wondered about that sound too...
I guess the problem with emulating that sound on yer average guitar rig, is that most of that
nasty, sizzly top end is lost with a normal speaker cab (guitar speakers rolling off treble).
Would one dare build a cab with a horn tweeter, like in some basscabs?  :o

Maybe have the treble rolloff in your pedals instead of the speaker, and then have no rolloff
in your "Edwyn Collins" Fuzz ?   :P :P :P Hey, I think I'd actually like to try that! Then I could plug my acoustic
into my electric rig!

Hmmm...

to an extent, you can use other non clipping pedals to shape any clipping pedal into instant nastiness:

Get a booster, or compressor--->dist/fuzz--->EQ--->amp

Try these fuzz-Boxes:

Maestro fuzz-Tone
MXR distortion plus
Black-cat Super-Fuzz

If you wanna build your own:

Samash fuzz-box
Psycho fuzz-Corp Buzz-Tone V.1 or V.2 (a buzz box varient that i came up with)
Jordan Bosstone
etc.....

If you want a vintage fuzz-Tone out of modern gear; Build your own, Use a compressor and an EQ And you'll pretty much be set, man....

PS:  Try getting ahold of a vintage MXR 10-band EQ.  It's the best EQ "pedal" i've yet to own/tried

OK. I found the source; for the recording he used a "Barnes & Mullins Colorsound Tonebender"

Well, like Led Zep I then... hmm

If you think of it, ANY fuzz direct into the mixing and EQ board could sound like this, whether its diodes or trannsistors clipping.

Personally, I think it's hard to beat a Tone Bender for the vintage sound. I've yet to build a germanium TB, but I plan to, just to see what the differences will be in tone from the SI version I built (Mk II Professional), which is great as is.
