Hi there!

Well, that's about the question. Buy or build? I need a chorus (pretty quick), and usually I'd go for cheesy and cheap, but for some reason even the cheapest cheesiest chorus pedals have become pretty expensive. So I thought about the Small Clone. How are the reissues? I can get one at a local dealer for â,¬69, is that a fair price? Or are they junk and I should build one?

Anyone?
Thanks!

oh I forgot.... how does the Dano Cool Cat compare? It's slightly cheaper, but the downside is it needs 18V, and I haven't found any schem yet  :icon_mrgreen:

If you need one quick and dont have time to build/debug then buy one :D
I'm 99.9999% sure that all the dano's are 9 volt !
"Cool cat" which is a large metal box should sound nice !
How about Ebay for a cheaper chorus ?
The Arion Japanese SCH-01 is Fab, ask Scott Henderson etc etc !
I just found another "Pearl CH-01" on there for 35 bucks !!

Cool Cat is Cool, uses 18v, and is 'subtle', nice sound.
Small Clone I don't know about except what I've read, which means they're really cool.
IF time is the issue, buy one, even if it's not...

If you are short on time buy one.  If you want to build a cool chorus the Small Clone with a couple of mods is very cool.  If you decide to build one you will probably have as much money into the build as buying one.  It is still one of the coolest builds I have done.

hmmm. Went to the store and tried a russian small stone RI. Definitly not my cup of tea. Maybe I'll try my luck on ebay or something.

oops yeah my mistake... I played the small clone of course (damn, these names are confusing, aren't they? the guy still said it was the russian version... what do I know  8) ). Still, didn't like it too much... but maybe that's because I'm not into chorus at all  ;) .

afaik, there is no russian version of the Small Clone...

(if you played a big black or green box which warbled/modulated, it was a phaser...)

wondering here, why you "need a chorus pretty quick",
while you aren`t "into chorus at all" :icon_question:

I need one because as a side project I joined a pop-rock-cover band  8) . And no, I was playing the small clone (it said so right on the pedal  ;D ). Guess the guy in the store was just telling bull.

I guess I'll take it slow to decide what to get for QUALITY, and maybe in the meantime snatch a cheap DOD or something on ebay for a few bucks.

and btw.... I know the difference between a phaser and a chorus  :icon_mrgreen: I have a Phase45 in my setup, and I used to have a pretty cool coron chorus about 10 or 15 years ago, when I decided I didn't like chorus and gave it away  ::)

Check Ebay out for a used Ibanez CS-9.  They are a great sounding chorus and still fairly cheap.

I like the sound of the BOSS CE-3...fantastic sound

you can't talk until you have someone tell you that an envelope filter isn't an effect pedal.  ::)

I had bought a cosmetically damaged copy of this pedal to have a test bed for MN3007 BBDs. I liked the sound, did NOT like the sheetmetal housing (a common complaint with E-H pedals). It took me a few hours, and I re-housed the thing in a "BB" enclosure. The key to getting it all in there is replacing the OEM 24mm speed control with a 16mm 1 meg reverse audio from my stock. I also replaced the standard-size "intensity" slide switch with a miniature version, but I would check into the available mods, which I think include a "depth" pot. Iwill document this at some point if I have time.

FWIW, I built mine for about half of what a new (discounted) one would cost and it's in a much nicer enclosure...and probably sounds better.  Still, if you don't have the resources to etch your own PCB it might be more time/cost effective to just buy one.

Not cheap ($125 - $150 used on ebay), but the BOSS DC2 (Dimension C) is a really nice chorus, especially if you run a stereo setup. It' s often described as the chorus for people who don't like chorus :) No knobs, just four push-button presets.

I have the Small Clone pcbs with solder mask and tinned, so building on those is quick and easy.

Get the rest of the parts from Small Bear (or locally if you can find them).
