I bought a selection of accessories from widgetsupply.com and spent a few hours in the workshop this afternoon trying to figure out this painting technique...    I finally got the look I wanted as you can see here on this metal box with the pseudo-flame top:

It is not the easiest paint job to do and you waste $4 or $5 worth of supplies on each box!

A fine finish like that is well worth the 4 or 5..

Jack, that is sweet.  Very nice.  Could you pull off some sort of sunburst using that technique?

A couple of boxes for Keeley Delay prototypes...  the one on the left is a burl finish (that I will keep) and the one on the right is a flamed top that I'm sending to Robert.

You cannot really see the depth of the finish and it takes on a different look from every angle!

You could just do some lines simulating wood, and do a normal sunburst.

That's what I did here http://my.opera.com/gtech/albums/showpic.dml?album=9306&picture=81798 except that I used real wood laminate glued on the top.

Btw, nice boxes Jack.
