DIY cable/plug problem

....just put together a Mogami and Canare instrument cable using Neutrik connectors using the diagram below.

For some reason, the cables are extremely dull sounding (like I rolled back the tone on my guitar) and the output is much less with my humbucker than my single coils.  I tried a cheap cable just to make sure my guitar was not the problem and the cheap cable sounds crisp and clear.  What did I do wrong???

some nice cable has a semi conductive sleeve under the shield, for static crackles.  If thats touching your signal wire somewhere it will act as a resistor to ground, sucking your tone like a mofo.  You can check the resistance between tip and sleeve (without the cable plugged into anything) and it should read as an open circuit on the highest setting.  I know this because it happened to me :'(
