1N34a instead of 1N270?

I'd just use a jumper and make sure you don't plug in a power supply with the wrong polarity.

I think the 1n270 was chosen because it's germanium and the forward voltage drop is very small. So, if you must substitute, use a Schottky diode.

You're right. 

I didn't look at the schematic, just assumed it was the usual diode from +9V to ground rather than an inline protection diode.  You know what they say about assumption.
