Stompbox wiring for fuzzface

Hi,

I was making an axis face as my first ever build, but it all went horribly wrong when it came to wiring up the circuit board to the stomp switch, jacks and power. So, after getting solder everywhere and having to scrap the board, I'm building a simpler fuzz for my 2nd attempt in the world of DIY effects building. I have all the parts I need (including some AC128 transistors), so I just need to clarify what I'm doing before I start.

I'm gonna build the PNP version of the arbiter fuzz clone from here: http://fuzzcentral.tripod.com/fuzzface.html with some AC128's.

However, can someone please draw me a really easy to read diagram of how to hook the PCB layout (found here: http://fuzzcentral.tripod.com/fuzzface/fuzzfacelayout.gif ) up to stomp switch, pots, stereo input jack and mono output jack, battery connector and 9V DC mains jack exactly as I would need to for that particular circuit? That would help me in learning it so much, as at the moment I haven't seen a clear diagram that explains where each lead goes, so I have no idea how it's actually working, it just seems like a random tangle of wires.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to mention I'm using a 3DPT switch and positive grounding (although I don't actually understand what that means...)

EDIT Again: Heres a simple diagram with as much as I've been able to work out on it:

Center lug of 3PDT to lug 2 of volume pot. lug 3 of volume pot to a ground point, ie ring of output jack.

You want to connect the positive terminal of the DC jack to all the ground points, circuit ground, and the ring of input or output jacks.

you want to connect the negative terminal of the DC jack to the relevant point on the circuit board.

^ that's standard wiring, man.

Your using PNP with positive ground eh?  Then you'll need this diagram:

Hope that makes it clear.  If it doesn't- i'll make a schematic for youse, man....

I told him to wire his 3PDT differently, either way will work.

Thanks guys,

Using that image you posted Yun and the diagram I found on general guitar gadgets I've been able to put together an idea of how it works I think,

heres the image: http://tpr.i8.com/FuzzFace_Done.gif

Will that work or have I missed something?

The image you linked doesn't work, man.  Give me a few minuits; i'll whip up a diagram for youse....

here you go, dude.  Sorry it's a bit sloppy, man- i was in a rush....

Did you try it, mr.Adam?  How'd it go eh?

not yet, gonna try it in the next few days, waiting for parts to come. I'm at uni at the moment, actually just photocopied my PNP sheets for the PCB.

Just trying to make sure Ican wire it up, as my last attempt at an axis face failed quite miserably.

I think I'll avoid soldering as many wires as possible, so just solder the ones to the actual PCB, then the others I'll just wrap around the lugs on the pots, switch etc. so I can test it works before I solder it, thats what I should of done last time I think.

Hi,

It doesn't use a 3PDT switch, but this http://smallbox.zeonhost.com/projects/fface/ may also help for all wiring except the led...

petemoore

Here's some suggestions you already may know
Socket the transistors [you can use PNP Si's for testing, I have some blown of that type, also some Ge's I blew...ouch]
Trimpot Q2 collector resistor [8k2], this way you can bias the circuit easily, swap trannies if you like more easily.
I built a FF 'testboard' with sockets for Q's, Caps, trimpots for Q2collector...and a buncha more sockets and trimpots that are less 'required' for testing and Tuning the FF circuit for transistors choices and voicing.

You talking about the original eh?

You can pretty much use a 3PDT in any bypassed (on and off) stomp-box , man.  It's all about the "know how", i guess....

Well I've confused myself with this as well.  I'm trying to wire up one of the Sunface boards I got from Analogman and I've been having problems.  I tried using a modified version of Yun's diagram above but all I've got now is a pulsing sound that increases in speed by the fuzz pot although the volume seems to be working.  I'm getting zero guitar sound through as well.  Is anyone familiar with the board enough to help?

jimbob

Im getting ready to start my analogman board as well. I noticed that there are 2? different boards for this? One with a 2nd trim pot on it.. also on one pic theres a cap placed differently when another trim pot is there.
Im waiting on my part orders to come in. I hope you get it figured out

and this

from what I undestand one of those trim pots are a Tyco brand you cant get from mouser in small quantities.

bass_econo

From what I got from studying the board is that you move the .1uf cap up and perpendicular to where it was placing a 10K pot in the place of the 8.2K resistor.  If you look at the traces you can see that it is made to be modular for that.  I was going to try that part later.  Right now I'm just trying is "stock".

jimbob

I agree. Thats what Im going to do 1st as well. I cant believe how nice those boards are!!!

Econo- are you using the same type parts as listed on the pic? Such as the carbon comp resistors ect...

No I didn't have on hand.  I wanted to just check it out before I ordered any parts.  I only have one NKT275 as well (which may be my problem).  I'm going to look tonight and see if I can get it running.  I'll let you know later tonight.
