Gtr - BM triangle - SSS speaker saturation - condor - soundcard

Just one chord, played soft/loud/cleaned up with gtr vol and "finger nail"
at the end for some "AC 30" bell quality ...
I hope this demonstrates how good these sound, very "amp like" IMHO
and I also hope the mp3 doesn't "degrade" the audio too much .... sounds quite
close to the original here, on decent speakers ... :D
not so good on "laptop" type speakers though  !!
Play it LOUD   !!

Mhhh... Sorry to say it but we cannot make a fair comparison if we don't have the "without SSS" sample as well (it shold be recorded on the same clip ideally).

Here you go :

So, gtr- BM triangle-condor-soundcard

Settings all left the same.
Doesn't seem quite as "clear" or "realistic" to me ... but it's a subtle tone
change !

BTW, I just tried the SSS/Condor on my Pod, it sounds WAAY better than the Pods
"speaker out" setting, much more "full" with more body and a less "scouped" sound.
Makes the Pod's sim sound like a wasp in a jam jar  !!!

Nice. Thanks for posting the second clip.

After listening the clips several times I focused on the last 15 seconds on both (several times more). The effect is there, I would describe the SSS clips as having some extra compression and warmth. Beautiful.

As for the POD cabsim, I never really liked the sound of existing cabsims (either commercial or DIY), which is what led me to develop the Condor in the first place.

MartyMart

Great, glad that you approve  :D
Yes i agree, warmer and more compressed.
Looks like an "SSS/Condor" combo box is in order then....
What's the "best" way to join them up ?
One box/dual switches,  or is separate boxes
the way to go .... as i have them now.

I think one box would be ideal. If you use the pot you can always bypass the SSS if you wish.

Marty, is there any chance you could provide a "dry and wet" soundclip of the Condor? I am a "speaker emulator cynic" ;) but would love to be convinced otherwise.

No offense to Brian or Gary, but all I'm hearing in the ROG clips is a prominent mid-scoop which I don't particularly like. I don't hear the "de-fizzing" I kind of expect to hear in a speaker sim.

I can do that on monday, I've gotta run soon, off to see "The Stranglers" in London  :D
I hope that you like those clips, believe me, with it "off" direct to sound card, it sounds
truly "AWEFUL" !!
I think it's suitably "warm" and "de-fizzed" and very amp-like in sound ....
I'm blown away by this little beauty, in particular with the "SSS" in circuit too and I'm not
"easily pleased"  Doug   :icon_wink:
It's a 10/10 as far as I'm concerned

Wow, I just realized I was in the wrong thread... :icon_redface: I thought this was the review thread. I'll have to start reading more carefully... :icon_redface:

Anyway, you are right Marty- it sounds very good. A "dry" one would be nice for comparison too, if you get a chance on Monday.

Thanks,

Doug

Wow. I can definately hear the effect  right in the beginning of the clip. To my ear, it lo-fi's the sound. Adds more mids and a slight overdrive. And boy do I like it.

Next on my to-build list is a lil' box for the cases I don't feel like hauling my backbreaking 2x12" combo along. That box, of course, includes two or three of ROG amp sim's too.

Hmm, what about a new article on the ROG page - the SSS.

Next article should be an output transformer frequency response and saturation simulator (with a pot to regulate the size of the simulated transformer). Let's have the whole package. :)

I'm glad you like it Jim, it's WAY more impressive "in the flesh" than the clips BTW
I would recommend you build both the "SSS" and the "Condor" which I may
re-house into one larger box, for portable "amp in a box" use.
One of ROG's amp sims upfront would also be great, perhaps an 18 or English Channel.

Perfect !
Miss this combo at your own risk  :icon_wink:
