Make a spst switch into an spdt

How would one go around doing this in an easy simple cheap circuit. What I need to do is, have a push switch that when pushed goes through my distortion circuit, and when not pushed it simply misses out the circuit going along a straight wire to the output.

Help?

Hmm, the title and the post tell totally dofferent things.

You want to buy a dpst switch, that makes for a LED-less true bypass and would be momentary, as you described. You can't do that with a common stompbox switch, you'll have to search around for the momentary footswitch.

Well, I have a spst switch. I just realised that if I used it in my circuit, when I turned the circuit on, the guitar sound would be distorted, when I turned it off, it wouldn't do anything. I wanted, on: distortion, off: clean. That wont happen. So I figured I needed a switch, that will switch between one wire between the input and output and one that will go to my distortion circuit. When i am play, I don't want to have to fiddle around with a switch, I want a button.

So I need a to make the SPST switch I already own, switch between 2 different circuits basically. How?

There is one possibility - a relay. Search on the net for some info on them, they're pretty nifty gadgets.

wait a second here...

Clarify what you need, you're a bit all over the shop at the moment!  :icon_biggrin:

Is it;

one press = distorted
another press = clean

Well, that's just a bypass switch isn't it?

Or do you want;

press down = distorted
lift off = clean

??

Or something else?

I'm electing this one. :)

In that case, you'd want a Momentary switch, which doesn't click on/off. When you push it down, it does one thing, when you don't it does the other.

However, wouldn't it be easier to use a normal dpdt switch? (or 3pdt if you can buy them)

Hav a look at http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/index.php?option=content&task=category&sectionid=4&id=23&Itemid=200 and GEO for more info, or search this forum.

Actually, some types do. I sold RG a bunch of SPDT momentary switches a while back that clicked almost just like a Carling DPDT switch does. But, generally speaking, you're right, they don't click.  :icon_wink:

Nah, I think what i'm looking for is that SPDT relay. That's exactly it pretty much :D Thanks, now to find it for cheap in the UK.

what are you trying to achieve?  It kinda sounds like you're a little confused...we can help with more infor... :icon_question:

If you want the first thing that Niftydog said (press once: distortion, press again: clean), you can do it with a SPST switch plus a few components (1 or 2 ICs, a few caps and resistors). Just tell if you have a momentary SPST (press: the lugs connect, lift: the lugs disconnect) or a non-momentary SPST (press: the lugs connect, press again: the lugs disconnect). I have a link with a few electronic bypass schematics, but need to know which kind of switch do you have.
