help with water decal

Hi
I'm making a pedal where the sides etc. should be in the "clean" aluminium color(stay the same as it is) but the water decal should be on a white background. Kinda like the Effector 13 pedals. What does they use to make the layout?
And can I spray white paint on the backside of the decal?

Just tape the sides and spray paint the top white.
EDIT: Just took a look at those pedals: it's printed on photo paper I recon and glued. No white paint involved

What decals are you guys using?  I've not tried them, but this place sells decals that print with a white background.  http://www.mcgpaper.com/modeldecals.html
