I absolutely love MOSFets as shunt clippers. Will try. Now that I've strarted playing bass again. :)

Just a design note: with the MOSFETs set up that way, without series diodes, all you're hearing is the reverse-direction body diodes, not the diode connected MOSFET itself.

That might be quite a pleasing sound, but it's not the sound of the MOSFETs being diode connected.

Really?  Thanks for the heads up.  I was going on what I'd seen used in Joe Davisson's Amber Boost, because it uses a pair of mosfets in the feedback loop.  Do you mean there should be another diode attached to the source of each fet?
