Where canI get an 18VDC power supply?

Any recommendations for an 18VDC power supply for my newly built PT80? Radioshack only seems to carry AC adaptors for 18/24 volts, no DC...

usually any goodwill has tons of adapters.  You can find all kinds of voltages and some are AC, some are DC.  If you can only find AC, just get diodes and capacitors to rectify and filter it and maybe a regulator so you have a constant level.  Usually $1-2 for adapters at a Goodwill store.  That's where I get all of mine.  Radio Shack is so crappy on power adaptor pricing.    :icon_mrgreen:

If you buy a wall wart from Good will, but a DMM on it to make sure its really 18VDC. Some are only rated under load and may not be what it says on the package. Thats a good way to fry some ICs

The only one worth bothering with is the Dunlop ECB04.  It's regulated and has the usual size with center negative polarity.

You might want to get the exact supply, but they all [ones ive measured] fall somewhere above the voltage stated.
An alternative that lets you adjust the voltage, and supposedly helps *filter or at least regulates [I've noticed lower noise using this for dapter] is a voltage regulator [and a few other R's and C's]. *actually they call it 'rejection' IDRC, check out the data sheets for VRegs, LM317 is EZ wire...see if it'll do 18vdc in and 12vdc out, I don't think ou'll need a heat sink.
I haven't tried exactly what yu're doing, but noise from power supplies has problematic with 'regular' WW's.

... the same goes for the adapters from Rat Shack as well.  Everything nowadays is built to just about where it needs to be in operation, which means it's usually too cheap to be used for anything else without some help.  I always go over on voltage adapters so I can filter and regulate them back down to what I really need, then you've got a little extra juice when you need it.

Word. That's what I picked out as well. It's cheap too.

I was wondering about this before:
Do you really need an 18V wart for the PT-80?
The 7812 only needs something like 15Volts. I believe the wallwart for my PT-80 is a 15VDC unregulated thing from Velleman.
It's really unregulated because it puts out more like 19 Volts iso 15.

Thanks everyone! I'll probably pick up that Dunlop that was mentioned. I don't know enough to mess around and build an adaptor yet. My understanding is that if I mess up, I'll get electrocuted and die, my pedal will be fried, I'll cause a poweroutage in the entire northeastern United States, and I'll knock the DIYSTOMPBOXES.COM servers out of commission. I'd rather spend the $15 or so :-)

If you use a AC wallwart then all the scary voltage is in the plastic box. You can then rectify and regulate the power supply in the stompbox, possibly using a larger filter cap than a regulated stompbox would (+1000uF). Good theorectical practice for when you build an amp.
