The Chapman stick !!  It's been around for years, Peter Gabriel's bass player Tony Levin, is
one of the more famous users   :D

Interesting. And this guy is a great player. But you don't need to use the Stick to play this kind of sound. Stanley Jordan do it using one guitar, and this brazilian guy (http://www.marcinhoeiras.com/) do it using two guitars at the same time (he was inspirated by Stanley, then learnt how to do this kind of tapping and met Stanley, got a few tips from him, practiced, and met him again. Stanley was surprised how good this guy is, and started to use two guitars at the same time after see this guy doing the same thing).

There's a guy here in Bloomington that performs at a local cafe every week playing the Chapman Stick. Pretty interesting sounds.
If it ain't broke...   ...it will be soon.

I've actually got one.  I've been wrestling with it for years, but I suck at it and I still love the sound of my guitar more.  They're great in the hands of someone who knows what to do with them, if they have decent taste in music.  All too often they are used for lame, deflated, new age-y, soft jazz suckiness.  Listen to the songs by some of the users of the stick and you'll know what I mean.   :-\

MartyMart

Yeah, they tend to turn "Bass" players into "pseudo-guitar wagglers"   !
I hate it when Bass players go "up the dusty end"  three strings is more
than enough for bass   :icon_lol: :icon_rolleyes:

The Bass player (Shawn Malone) from progressive metal band "Cynic" does a good job with one of these on their album "Focus."

You mean like this guy?  ;D

No matter how much he has played this thing, I bet there are still about double as much notes left to be played.

And its pickup could power a tube amp! :D

Yeah, for bluegrass, anyway.  :icon_wink:

For some serious touch guitar chops, check out Levin's KC compadre, Trey Gunn!

These are cool too - Trey Gunn of King Crimson has a custom model. The Chapmans are still made in Mr Chapmans back shed!

He does, and Paula Cole and Joan Armatrading and Burt Bacharach and David Bowie and T-Bone Burnett and Karen Carpenter and Tracey Chapman and Cher and........ you get the idea!

The man's a legend.

Shrimp down the pants!!!
“It also sounded something like the movement of furniture, which He
hadn't even created yet, and He was not so pleased.” God (aka Tony Levin)

God, the tone Gunn gets out of his fretless Warr just kills me. I can't remember what song it's on, but I'm pretty sure it's from "The Power To Believe", which is an incredible album.

This could be the first time I've ever said such a thing (and dear lord, let it be the last), but Jim that guy looks like he has a guitar with a goiter.

I recently saw a documentary about John Lennon. They interviewed Tony Levin. I was blown away to find out he played bass on Lennon's 'Double Fantasy' album. Lennon knew who he was and was recommended to Levin by a friend. When they met Lennon told Levin "you can play bass on this one, but don't play too many notes". I thought that was funny as Levin is a monster bass player when he wants to be, and if you listen to this album you'll know what Lennon was talking about.
