Companding & Flanging

Small wonder that the two modes get attributed to all sorts of things when you see comments like this one from guitargeek.com:

• "Mode One borders very close to the bright and tinny side of things but has just enough watery whoosh to keep it from sounding completely sterile. If you�re after a warm and buttery phaser you may have some issues with the Boss and I�d look elsewhere. Where the PH-2 shines is in the resonant squawk of Mode Two. It has that honk of mid-range raspiness that sits perfectly in the mix of funk and disco, or any other booty moving music."

...or these sample comments from individual users over at Harmony Central.  Could YOU figure out what the modes do based on this?

• "Sadly the mode II is just unusable for me it sucks my tone."
  "Mode two is almost unbearable on your ears, as it adds even more noise. It's like having an oscillating EQ pedal that goes around and around in a nauseating swirling motion, but it never touches upon any of the settings you like."

The EHX Echoflanger I cloned has NE570 companding/expansion.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I assume then you finished this project? The last schem/layout file I found from this wasn't complete. Do you have a schem you could share?
