if you heavily distored a envelope filter, could it sound like an explosion?

i am thinking of designing a pedal that literally sounds like a bomb going off, if anyone has any ideas, let me know :icon_mrgreen:

I don't know exactly what it would do....I would say you're going to need to get someone with an envelope filter and a great heavy distortion pedal and hook them up, see what happens.

how are you going to design a pedal that sounds like a bomb going off, if you cant remove and replace the parts from your big muff?

Try a little tenderness.

what do you mean by that?

pedal design is pretty advanced.

knocking one together from a schematic is hard enough for a beginner, let alone starting completely from scratch.

i just think this could be a really funky sound, but yer, i admit, it sounds a bit complex for someone at my standards (lame basically), but surely it could be done?

many of us here have been building pedals for years, and still arent at the level where we can just pluck components out of the air and make them sound exactly as we want.

Infact, I would say that there are guys who have been at this for 30 years who can't do what you have asked.

I'm sure it can be done, but perhaps with a different approach.
Try a little tenderness.

do u think it could be possible to de-assemble a distortion pedal and a envelope filter and then hardwire the two pedals together?

sure, but why wouldn't you just take a distortion pedal, crank it full, then hook up an envelope pedal in line with it and see what happens?  No need to take them all apart.

Yes, you could do that.  I'm not sure if it would literally sound like a bomb going off, but it would sound interesting.  If you're into a quite ambitious project, I can send you the schematic for the envelope filter pedal that I have designed and built.  It has a pre-filter send and return loop so that the dynamics of the EF respond to the clean signal, but you can loop it through a high-gain distortion pedal for the filter section.  It also has an adjustable resonance up to a very narrow peak, high pass, low pass, and bandpass output mixer, rectifier trash input mix, external mod input, noise gen output.....

It's a near synth module, but is very fun to play with now that I'm done.  Let me know if you're interested and perhaps I can set aside some time to record what it sounds like with a high gain distortion pedal cranked in the pre-filter loop.

About making something that sounds like a bomb--I suspect you would need to delve into some synthesis and maybe use the guitar signal as a trigger.  Distorting and filtering a guitar signal to sound like a bomb sounds like there is some need for pitch shift down and sub-octave modulation as well as some injection of filtered pink noise.  As stated above, it is quite an ambitious endeavor though I don't want to discourage you from trying.  I still remember the guy who discouraged me from trying to build my own fuzz pedal...he thought it would be a whole lot easier and cheaper to just buy one.  He was probably right about it being easier, but it totally missed the point.  I still contend that for fuzz pedals that you can build them more cheaply than you can buy them as long as you account your time learning to do it  and the time for doing it as entertainment, hobby, worthwhile "self-improvement"...and that it is.  It's certainly more valuable to the health of your brain to spend your time building guitar pedals and playing music than it is to watch TV and drink beer.

Anyway...I got off on a rant there, sorry.  I think you're onto something to try there to start by combining a distortion pedal and an envelope filter.  It would probably sound more like a bomb if you miked a bass drum into it than a guitar would, though.

You would want the envelope filter to respond to the dynamics of the undistorted signal.  You would need to cut the trace to the envelope follower on the input, and make a separate wire from the input to the distortion pedal to the envelope follower so you have this:

Clean guitar---->Envelope follower-------------\
                 \---->Distortion pedal------>Envelope Filter----->Output

 Â There's something very close to what you're talking about.
 It's called the "UglY Face" [circuit snippets].
 It has Fuzz. Octaves. Env. Fil. ...and a "Knobs Theremin Mode". plus a diverse pallette of other Unique Wildnesses including a space invaders/asteroids setting [er I had going]...wide variety of tricks from a simple circuit. the difference between loud input / soft-to-no input...it goes from nasty fuzz into a whole other world of self oscillations/mixed with Fuzzguitar, depending on input sensativity control setting of input level detector, and input as controlled by dynamics on the strings or other source.
 Put a hard squash compressor in front for extended craziness of sustains.
 IIRC the Env control can have an alternate input, you could wire a looped keyboard or the bass drum to it !

Convention creates following, following creates convention.

dude, im loving your ideas, if u could get me some sound samples and anything else you could give me that could help, i would appreciate it soo much mate :icon_biggrin: but keep in mind, i used the whole 'bomb' consept as an example, but all your ideas that you have now said could be of great use to me, please do keep in contact

Man, you need to have more patience. You create another thread just to create a name of an effect that is still untested, invaded another guy's thread to ask somebody to answer your questions (not related to the thread), and keep doing posts for hurry the people to answer what you want. There's some guys that don't like these things, and if you keep doing them, you will only get to have been ignored by some (or lots) of guys who could answer your questions, but don't do it because you keep boring them.
