Hi Folks,

I was working on my reissue v 847 wah and broke off one of the little black 3 pronged transistors.

Can anyone tell me what the name of this transistor is so I can get a replacement? On the little black head it says:

H WPS
W18 (it think, hard to read)
5J

What is this called and where can I buy a replacement? Radio shack? Online?

Thanks for your help!!   :)

Can't remember righrt now but I think it's a simple npn transistor...try something common like 2N3904.

Thanks, but I was hoping to find an exact replacement for the broken transistor.

In the wah, it looks like there are 2 of these transistors with exactly the same markings on them. I broke one of them.

Can anyone else help? Is there a schematic or parts list for a vox v847 reissue that might hav ethe broken part name?

Please help...

Thanks much,

Dan

MPSA18 is the tranny.  It is a high gain, low noise NPN.  If you're in Europe the BC550 is a good sub.  A 2N5089 may be a good one, too, but I dont believe that they are spec'd as high of gain or as low of noise

Thanks!   :)

I'm a bit of a newbie. I'm in the USA. Does "tranny" mean the little black 3 pronged transistors? I just ordered the one you mentioned
(MPSA18) from Small Bear electronics. So is this the exact same transistor that comes stock in the vox wah? I want the wah to sound exactly the same (stock).

I found another transistor and put it in just to try it, but it sounded horrible, which is why I am looking for an exact replacement for the stock one I damaged.

You can probably read on your old transistor 'MPSA18'. These are Si [Silicon] Tranny's [slang for transistor], and as such are quite consistant from unit to unit. Just like the data sheet says they're 'low noise/high gain'.
The pinout of the transistor must be correct of course.-
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

The transistor is hard to read. I thought it said:

H WPS
W18 (it think, hard to read)
5J

But maybe it says:

H MPS
A18
5J

Does this sound correct?

yup, that's an MPSA18.
Be advised: not every manufacturer makes their transistors with the same pinout. Get a couple, and from a source that can advise you on the pinout - Steve (Smallbear) f'rinstance.
