Thinking it might be time to move beyond my Radio Shack 20/40 watt setup. Any suggestions that won't break the bank? Thanks.

Try the search function using:  cheap solder station or xytronic or just solder station. There is a lot of stuff here.

Remember to get some 63/37 solder if you don't already use it. There's nothing like a good iron with good solder. :)

I upgraded a few years ago when I was doing some computer repair work on the side, to a Weller WLC-100. Its relatively cheap, has a temp control, nice stand with sponge, etc. It does have a problem out of box though, the damn set screw for the tip tended to catch on the funnel. I filed it down a bit to bevel the edge, and now I have no problems. Finding tips can sometimes be a bit of a pain, though. But all in all, its a good iron for the money.

EDIT: Looks like SmallBear sells tips for these Weller irons. It uses the ST series tips, SB has the important ones (ST-4 for bigger jobs and ST-7 for most component work)

Skiraly,

I have been using this soldering station for about two years now, and would recommend it to anyone.  It heats up quickly, recovers instantly, and you can find your "sweet spot" within a few uses.  The metal "sponge" is great, too.

It is worth every penny!
